I haven't looked at HBMAME in years. I realize it's only maintained by 1 person and at the very least, appreciate the documentation purpose of it by giving people access to many hacks of games and what not.

Obviously, Robbbert, you're free to do whatever the hell you want with it, but after looking at the latest additions and some past ones, have you ever considered just putting the original parents into the source embedded into the executable and put all the hacked stuff into software lists?

Seems like it would make more sense to launch hacks and other additions from software lists rather than a bloated mame menu and the benefit to that would also be you could then further add documentation that's commented out in the XML file itself.

A software list is a list of cartridges or cassettes or floppy disks that connect to a system via that same real connection. So a cartridge goes into a cartridge slot that existed on a real system. A floppy disk goes into a floppy-disk-drive that exists on a real system. And so on.

An arcade game has none of those things. And so software lists cannot be used. Honestly I thought you knew about that stuff.

Perhaps you're thinking of IPS. That would make more sense. There's no list with that though - you're free to use whatever IPS patches you can find. But I don't have the knowledge to implement it. And now that memory regions are read-only, it probably never will happen.

That's not exactly true as we've seen it on official MAME when it comes to NeoGeo games, STV, etc.

It should be possible to bypass the portable physical device requirement in a situation where it makes the most sense.

If I look at HBMAME as a whole currently, instead of it being clone city with everything bloated into the executable, it seems like it would make the most sense if it all was presented in software list form in the situations where a parent has tons and tons of clones, so your main menu is more organized and more documentation could happen in the XML files themselves.

Not really. You're free to try showing how it's done though.

HBMAME is not a documentation project. That's what MAME is for.
As for the main menu, users are free to use whatever frontend might present the information in a more palatable form.

I won't be changing anything. You can use it or not as it pleases you.
Or you can create your own derivative to suit your requirements.

yeah, it would be trivial for even a junior programmer to convert a lot of those drivers to load things from software lists for the purpose of HBMAME, it would even fit the "100 hacks on the same hardware" model better, and possible help people developing the hacks add their own as they could edit the xml files without recompiling.

seems like the perfect place to use software lists to be honest.

The Neo Geo, ST-V and Tourvision are cartridge-based systems. Software lists are not for arcade systems that don’t have interchangeable software media in official MAME. You can see this for cost-reduced single-board games based on Neo Geo hardware that go in neopcb.cpp and don’t have corresponding software list entries. In official MAME, Robbbert is correct in saying that, “A software list is a list of cartridges or cassettes or floppy disks that connect to a system via that same real connection. So a cartridge goes into a cartridge slot that existed on a real system. A floppy disk goes into a floppy-disk-drive that exists on a real system. And so on.”

At least 1 person gets it. My thoughts exactly.
