Banning Pinball & Videogame museum to be auctioned off
#391566 - 08/07/21 12:42 AM

https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2021/07/a...ction-of-games/

This was an incredible collection of video and pins most of which had been restored to pristine condition.
Now the entire collections will be auctioned of in September to make way for a pot growing farm.
What a damn shame.

Among the collection is a Sega Space Tactics and a Sinistar Cockpit.
They also had an impressive collection of mechanical shooters

This will be one of the nastier auctions I imagine.

That makes me sick to my stomach..

Such a shame.

Did anyone find/see a reason why? Did I miss it?

If it were closer to the east coast, I would pull a ton of collectors together to grab the lot. But, unfortunately, the cost for shipping/transport would be too costly to justify. I just hope that many of these can go to good homes at "reasonable" prices.

I so glad they doing this. I don't like people throwing their machines away.

Yes, a damn shame they couldn't figure out a way to combine the two.

I wouldn’t be surprised if bribes or political favors were exchanged
behind the scenes to pull some eminent domain issue amongst corporate land owner,
county government and venture capitalists wanting to replace location with cannabis farm.

Gregf unfunny, sarcasm bit for the day:

The Smithsonian Museum is taking up space. Bulldoze the junk and replace with a
Kardasian museum. It will be a revenue generator.

-- Dude was planning to move the collection to a Palm Springs location
-- So he worked out a long-term lease of the Banning location to a cannabis cultivator
-- Palm Springs deal fell through; Banning deal already finalized

-- Then lack of motivation to re-start the hunt for a new place, combined with the games have to be moved out by a certain date already.

RELAX and just have fun. Remember, it's all about the games.

I wonder if the owner of the land realized they could get more rent money from a pot farm than from a bunch of arcade machines and decided to end the lease or something (its unclear who owns the property...)

Has anyone contacted them to see if they are willing to preserve the roms on any of the arcade games?

Looking around at all the abandoned strip malls around this town, it's hard to imagine having difficulty finding a location for an arcade.

A walk through in 2019
https://youtu.be/uadQg_JEs-o

To clarify:
The buildings are leased. The owners of the buildings and the city forced the issue on the Banning Pinball Museum BPM.
This was also caused by Covid of course but there have been issues with the city regarding how often they could have events and the hours they could be active.
I know, wtf right? I doubt the local hotel and shopping center had any complaints about the flood of gaming geeks pouring into the mostly sleepy town.
So the place is going to the much more lucrative pot farming business.

BPM did plan to move to the local airport where there is an empty hanger that would easily house the entire collection. This was going to be a win win, making parking and transit easier, solving the noise issue, etc.
There was very high confidence this was going to work even though there would be a good chunk of change spent fixing up the hanger.

That deal fell apart.
And with that, so goes the collection.
I have no doubt the BPM owners tried to find other options but costs were to steep and time has run out.
They need to be GONE by October.

As for rom backups, there is nothing in the collection that needs backing up afaik.

They did have many very rare titles.
Aztarac, War of the Worlds (color), Space Tactics, etc.
The big draw to the place was that nearly all machines were in pristine condition. There were those that complained that the owner went a bit to far in some cases, choosing to build a new replacement cabinet rather than salvaging a damaged one. I only mention that as to help describe the lengths to which perfection was sought. Pins were throughly modded with color dmd and other toys. Playfields were clean, bulbs changed out for quality LEDS. Many pins included 70s-80s titles had video screens over them to display gameplay. Yeah mechanical tables. Thats nuts! But hell if thats your passion go for it.
For the short time I was into collecting, I sought perfection as well.
Man it will devour your bank account.

I am seriously bummed I never got to see this place. We had plans to go down several times but for one reason or another it kept getting postponed.
So, thats what I know. The auction is happening really because the owner was flooded with calls to sell 1-2 cabs here and there and of course low balling. Again, no time for that nonsense. They have to be out. On the plus side a lot of people are going to get there grails.

How many lottery Powerball drawings between now and September 10? Cuz I'd buy the entire collection as is and keep this museum going somewhere... $2 investment... 200 million dollar payoff... be right back... heading to the gas station to get a ticket before it's too late...
