Trying to find out the name of a game

Hi all,
First post here. I remember playing an arcade side-shooter in the '80s where the player was represented by a ship which could warp above or below ground with the below ground section having a much higher-tech look to it than the surface. Essentially, it was like playing two side-shooters at once.
As the player progressed, the ship could acquire expansions which eventually transformed it into a robot-looking machine.
The game had a truly bangin' soundtrack and due to its unusual play-style I'd love to be able to play it again, but of course, I can't remember its name.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
