sync refresh tearing issue...
#390783 - 05/01/21 06:00 PM

I have MAMEUI 188 and matching rom set, somehow got the tearing GONE.

Tried latest MAMEUI 231 (do not have matching rom set quite yet, but using 205) and tearing is back with same settings as 188.

Tried using 188 roms, still tearing.

This is exact same computer, same monitor, same time.

I'm aware many games have slightly alternative refresh rates and all that, but any ideas why the new does not act as good as the old with same settings?

k, after wiping all my settings in 188, discovered the ONLY setting needed for no tearing is TRIBLE BUFFERING. That totally cures it in 188. Does not fix in 231

[additionally, I am running 188 in Win7 Compat mode, but I doubt that has any effect, but it speeds up list loading for no reason]

If you have a modern variable sync monitor and video card, w/ Freesync or G-Sync that's the best bet, then you can turn off all the toggles that attempt to mitigate tearing and output the off 60Hz signal signal directly for nice smooth scrolling.

If you don't, the next best is turning on triple buffer, *and* turning on refreshspeed.

Don't turn on the syncrefresh or waitvsync with the above options.

You may also have some *.ini files conflicting with/overriding the main mame.ini.

thank you great info! I will start checking INI files. I started by deleting all the ini setups and working fresh. My test showed, same game rom, same computer/screen/gpu, triple buffered worked fine in .188 and failed in .231

Is something broked/changed in the newer MAME? I was hoping for newer better functionality than worse.

k, I've now got a latest version of ROMS 228, and the matching MAMEUI64 .228, still having this problem.

tried many combinations, but none are fixing it.

188 works perfect, newer does not. got the latest W10 updates, latest NVideo game drivers, 188 is tear free.

Oh well. I'll just keep 188 set installed also. GUESSING some newer MAME driver updates somehow crippled my NEWZEALAND STORY game refresh rate, where older 188 drivers worked okay.

Thanks for trying to help.

hmmm. on a whim, I hit ALT ENTER and made it a Window from full screen. NO tearing at all, but I do see it hesitate for a frame every second or so - same as the 188 version.

I'm okay saying it is my combination of system acting up, but with it working perfectly fine full screen in 188, with nothing special in setup, I feel MAME has the issue.

As John said, I REALLY would suggest you get a freesync monitor (if your GPU supports it) otherwise, only games that natively run at 60 Hz will ever be truly smooth and synced correctly.

Trust me, it really is night and day.
