Question about tranquillizer gun
#390422 - 03/25/21 01:39 PM

Is it normal that the screen flips upside down during attract mode? Cocktail not selected!

The ROM we have only supports cocktail mode. An upright cabinet would need a different ROM. I think some people came up with a hack that disables screen flipping that you could apply as a cheat or ROM patch.

On some games of this era, the trick to select between cocktail or non-cocktail mode on actual hardware is a DIP switch or jumper hardwired to gate off the screen inversion control. I haven't verified whether or not that could be the case here.

The hardwire jumper is a possibility with some companies doing it that way, but
after looking at sourcefile for a refresher and noticing a few of the game entries have cocktail table romsets, I am going with Vas take on this.

Judging by Japanese region Tranquilizer Gun flyer, Tranquilizer Gun may have been a dedicated upright cab and cocktail table with a rom or two being different between the Japanese region cab models. And any Tranquilizer Gun coinop hardware that might have been marketed/exported to N. America or other regions was an export kit update that was meant to fit inside/replace Borderline in Borderline cabs.

That's my guess with Tranquilizer Gun. Maybe someone emufriendly in Japan might be able to help out later and fill in the blanks with upright and cocktail table model rom sets? *wishful thinking*

As for Japanese region Tranquilizer Gun flyer, that is a flyer that is on want list of Flyer Fever. iirc System 16 web site had a link to a different flyer variation, but since that link no longer existed, Sixtoe removed that flyer link.

Sega Carnival (upright, AY8912 music)
Sega Carnival (cocktail)

Sega Space Trek (upright)
Sega Space Trek (cocktail)

Sega Space Attack (upright set 1)
Sega Space Attack (cocktail)

Sega N-Sub (upright)

As for N-Sub, while upright is emulated, there is also a cocktail table unit not yet emulated and the roms set layout is different between upright cab versus cocktail table model which will make the cocktail table unit a different rom set and also be a wanted rom set.

Is the current version in MAME the same as the one included in Sega Ages 2500 Vol. 23?

I never tried playing the emulated game in MAME before [currently using an old-out-of-date Sony Vaio system from 2003 that can run versions of MAME up to .178...nothing newer than that]. I wouldn't know if it is different than the product [Sega Ages 2500 Vol. 23].

The game has no dipswitches at all.

I used Sega Ages 2500 Vol. 23: Sega Memorial Selection
for the PS2 and cheat engine debugger to do a rom compare of the MAME romset. I had to grab the z80 rom addresses in the PS2 emulation.

The romsets are identical with the exception of 1 hexbyte of data in ROM U4

This is what I found. u4.bin at hex address 34A: value 28 is cocktail 18 for upright.

You can use the MAME debugger and change the byte on the fly back and forth and the screen with flip or not flip on the second player.

It's just a matter of someone else verifying it other than myself.
