Cant get defender running right

I have a cabinet with windows 10 on it and installed mame 228 merged on it and in defender i cannot figire out why thrust wont work on the joystick moving forwards and backwards , i can make the thrust on a button but i want it on the joystick cause im to busy using the other button while playing

Defender has a two-way joystick for vertical movement, and buttons for thrust and reversing horizontal direction. That's just the way the game works.

version on before that worked with joystick conroling forward back and thrust all in one,i can set it so joy does forward thust but not reverse
