Messing with my video card BIOS
#389380 - 01/04/21 02:33 PM

Have a shit LG ultrawide and a Sapphire Radeon Rx Vega 64. Been getting link errors coming out of sleep mode far too often, so I've been poking around the net about BIOS info.

The amdvbflashWin program Originally listed the BIOS as P/N 113-D0500100-105. GPU-Z says the subvendor is AMD/ATI. But... I still have the box. It's a Sapphire! I also noticed in the "Technologies" section at the bottom, OpenGL was not checked (but to my knowledge, I've never had a problem with OpenGL stuff).

Found a seemingly updated Sapphire BIOS and tried to flash it. Same P/N but ending in O08. Subsystem mismatch error. Again, I have the box. IT IS A SAPPHIRE card!

The latest AMD bios I found ended in -102. Sounds like a downgrade from -105, right? The software can save the current BIOS, so I saved it, then flashed the AMD BIOS. Had to reboot twice, because of "hardware changes".

Now... The OpenGL 4.6 box is ticked, and it specifically says 4.6. Don't even remember if there was a specific number there when it wasn't ticked.

So anyway... bonus?

Sounds like the usual case of a manufacturer upgrade that is purely intended to brick your outdated component or make it look like it's unstable or failing. Planned obsolescence!

Same reason why my old Sempron (still with Windows XP!!!) is forced to run a video card driver from 2009, because the later ones from Nvidia don't work properly (using the integrated nForce 630a chipset because I can't be bothered finding a cheap PCI-E card for such an old POS).

What card do you have now, and how old does it need to be? Pretty sure I have a Radeon HD card laying around that'll work. Have an R9 290x as well, but that's probably too new (2013, I guess).

EDIT:HD 2600 pro sitting in an HD 4770 box (so the 4770 is most likely in the tower that I haven't turned on since I built it (after doing a full upgrade with a new case/cpu/MB/RAM).

290x in its proper box
X800 XL (PCI-e 1.0) in the 2600 box

Yea... I need to get rid of some old stuff...

But PCI-E isn't old, considering it's still being used. It's just a matter of lanes available. But won't a newer card run at reduced speeds on your motherboard? I'm pretty sure you can get one for like $40 or less (plus shipping).
