New Vs. Nintendo System homebrew
#389129 - 12/23/20 03:05 PM

A brand new game for the Vs. Nintendo System. The first of it’s kind in 30 years!

From Below is a brand new game released for the NES in November 2020, and ported to the Vs. Arcade system shortly after. It has gone through extensive updates to make this a true Vs. System game, and not just a quick port.

Featuring:

Coin-Op
Leaderboards
Redesigned Menus and Title Screen
All Settings Configurable via Dipswitches
Attract Mode
Free Play
Maintenance Button and Coin Counter Supported
Support all PPUs (RP2C04-0001/2/3/4, 2C03, 2C05 and even 2C02 [NES]).
Works on both Vs. Unisystem and Dualsystem (both sides)
Original Instruction Card (with printing instructions)
Download the game and learn more at http://vs.frombelowgame.com
Is this a candidate for MAME?

It's getting to the point, for parity with the home stuff, and because at this point in time *all* of this is a niche it would probably make sense to start adding this kind of thing.

I'd suggest some kind of additional header, such as 'New Working / NOT Working Recent Freely Distributed Software additions' and for the credits simply point at the site of distribution, but I think MAME supporting these things, and maybe more importantly, documenting all versions of these things (as they tend to drop off the official sites very quickly once bugs are found and new revisions are issues) is important.

It's an area MAME could support the scene, even if sometimes the software does not work. Again I think building bridges is important.

The criteria used to be that it had to run on original systems, but with so many FGPA recreations of original systems, even that becomes muddy, and MAME might have to start to be a little more flexible in the nature of the cloned hardware it emulates.

I think it should be added to MAME as long as you can burn it to ROMs and run it on the real hardware, which is the case here. Maybe add "(homebrew)" after the title to differentiate it from the manufactured games.

Many homebrews are already in MAME, I don't see any reason why this one should not.
