MAME .220 on Ubuntu - occasional GUI lockups

just started running MAME .220 on Ubuntu 20.10 -- some of the games will occasionally have a GUI lockup -- typically on exit.
I'm not a Linux expert -- but have tried most of the suggestions I've found for killing MAME -- none of those work -- only thing I've found I can do is ctrl alt F1 and choose to reboot PC. If I login via this scenario I'm right back to the hung GUI.
Other options I've tried don't work - don't display a dialog box to do anything etc: alt F2, ctrl alt t, esc, custom key sequences to fire up xkill, pkill or killall.
Any suggestions for something that may work to kill MAME without having to reboot?
thanks in advance!

ctl alt F3 --- finally seems to work...pulls up virtual console - then commands can be executed to terminate processes/programs.
ctl alt F2 exits virtual terminal.
Cheers!
