In case you may have missed it, the release of MAME 0.227 has been delayed and will not happen at its normally targeted interval (last Wednesday of each month). Read more about the reasoning and explanations HERE

Seeing that even I understood the explanation, I'd say it's a pretty good one.

Thanks! I tried to make it as approachable as possible.

So by changing to a simple non-clearing allocator, this is going to force drivers to be re-written to initialize class member variables in uninitialized memory? (Note: I'm probably not even close to understanding that correctly).

Those chips were just released to the public last week and you expect them to be in MAME already? Please.

You're right, you're not even close. Nothing is forcing anything to be "re-written". There are bugs in the drivers that using a non-clearing allocator has exposed. Those bugs are being fixed. Nothing is being "re-written".

Some of us are already working with people who have Apple M1 computers to do testing/benchmarking on them: https://forums.bannister.org/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=118135#Post118135 More benchmarks should be added later today.
Unlike iOS devices, the Apple Silicon Macs are not locked down. They can run any userspace program you want. As for operating systems other than macOS: they use an implementation of Secure Boot, but it can be disabled and custom code can be loaded, even as early as the kernel. The tooling to enable this was not present in the release OS, but is being added to macOS 11.1, which is currently in beta: https://twitter.com/comex/status/1328800304318603265
That said, even though you hypothetically will be able to boot something like Linux, it will take effort to make it correctly function. Porting Linux, drivers, etc to this platform is not something Apple is going to do for you!

Those Benchmark number look really good.
Love to see the full Suite of games in John IV benchmark list done. I'd also be very interest to see how well "dolphin" does.
Hopefully we see some equally fast ARM CPUs on a more open platform in the near future.

If all else fails, Burn the manual.

A wise choice to fix these issues now rather than letting them keep building. Excellent being vocal with what is happening to stop any rumors in their tracks, keep on doing great work.

What an informative and generally excellent writeup from MooglyGuy, and so good to see MAMEdev caring about its user community to this extent. Thumbs way up - so impressed.
