huh? You don't need ports. You can play the actual wad files from the PC version of the game. The folder I have on my microSD card for Doom (gzdoom) is 52.7MB, and I have the main .wad files in there for doom and doom2. Maybe what you're playing has high res graphics or something?

i'm very aware. i've bought all doom titles for pc, and many of them on multiple platforms. i also try most of the source ports and spend tons of time tinkering. i'm just wanting to know if the extra 600mb is just for all the intro fmv's or what. i like things lean.
i was disappointed in nightdive's doom64 on pc, but i just bought it tonight for switch and it feels fantastic!

That's doom64, and an official port. I'm still trying to figure out what you mean by 650MB+ for doom/doom2. Link please?
EDIT: I had not realized that there are official ports for those as well. "Now, in celebration of DOOM's 26th anniversary, Bethesda has revealed during a livestream that both DOOM and DOOM II will be receiving some special updates in the near future. Part of this update is the free community-created add-ons (also known as WADs), which will appear in a separate in-game menu."
Are these official ports with the extras what you're talking about? Even if so, 600MB more does seem rather extreme...

Actually, those are updates that are 650MB+ (which usually include all previous updates, but I can guarantee they are missing something the game needs to run).
Looking at the base game (no updates), the installation file for Doom is 284MB, and 229MB of that is in the StreamingAssets folder: 109MB is audio (don't know the format... shows as a single file). There is a credits .mp4 video of 51.6MB doom_disk is 18.2MB (must be compressed?) menu_resources are 28.2MB
etc...

From what I've read, these aren't ports of the original Doom engine, but rebuilt in the Unity engine, which may explain some of the bloat. I have a feeling the music is no longer midi, but mp3 versions of all the tracks, which would be much larger as well.

I believe its original DOOM C code running as custom stuff on top of Unity (probably because its much easier to deal with all the differences between platforms by letting Unity deal with it than writing a brand new graphics backend and input backend and audio backend and stuff)

audio in the base installation is all 1 big file with no extention. Simply called "audio" and is 109MB. Instead of rendering/scripting the credits, they are in a 51MB .mp4 format video.
