Got a question on cd drives and lasers

Ok it's awhile but I've been trying to get my sega cd model 1 console up and running.
First it had a blown fuse and power board so I replaced that. Cd drive wouldn't spin, got that working, laser grinding gears at the end of travel is fixed so I'm down to 1 known last problem.
I've got everything running and running quite but it won't read the disc. Soooo my question is that I have it apart enough were I can run it without the cover. Should I be able to see the laser light up? Should I see a glow off of the bottom of the disc? Even in the dark I see no lighting either around the laser pod or the bottom of the disc.
Wasn't sure if in order to see the laser light you would have to look at it directly.
If there should be light then I'd say the laser is junk....
Thanks guys !

CDs are infra-red. DVDs are red. Blu-Ray is violet.
So as a CD player, you likely can't see it.
You need something that can see IR.

Use your cell phone to take a video of it running. The camera should pick up the IR and make it visible.

Thanks guys!!
Ok tried video with 2 different phones and they both showed nothing so I guess at this point it's safe to assume the laser is bad.
Thanks again I appreciate the help guys....

Point an IR remote control at your phone and record as a test!
