Keeping big brother out of my room...
#384209 - 11/08/19 11:45 PM

Hello all.

I figured this was as good a place to post this as any...
I’m building a new system i7/2600 with Windows 7. I had an XP system that stayed disconnected from the internet for 15 years or so. It was great -no pop-ups, no upgrade messages, etc.

I’d like to do the same with this Windows 7 machine (given that Win 7 will no longer be supported). To keep it tied to the internet “feels” like I’m inviting problems. I’d like to get it set up, and then unplug/isolate it -nothing gets in; nothing gets out (I don’t know, it felt cool to say).

I realize this might depend on what’s in the system software wise: i.e., certain programs HAVE to maintain a connection?

What am I planning on having in the computer you ask?
Well, for the moment:

Win 7
Mame 200
Launchbox

Am I being paranoid (it is the Loony Bin) or is someone else pulling this off with success -and their endorsement?

Thanks

> Am I being paranoid

Yes. You're being ridiculously paranoid. The FBI isn't going to find your kiddie porn stash unless you actively put it online. And if you claim that you don't have such a thing, then why the hell are you so worried about some government agency finding out your proclivity for furry porn?

I mean, maybe you don't look at that either, but all of you people who have some paranoiac fantasy that you're so fucking important that the government and/or major software companies somehow take any specific interest in your boring ass is just so tiresome. Like you're so special that some major software company with millions of customers is going to take specific interest in you. Give me a break.

I really can't stop laughing, MooglyGuy: you read WAY to deep into this.

The only thing I'm getting at is to not have a system connected to the internet with an operating system that is no longer supported: i.e., Win 7. What I'm "concerned" about is malware, viruses, and the like.

> all of you people

Really? Dude, there are plenty of places where you could have a lot more fun flaming people that ACTUALLY believe in what you're alleging here; this seems to be your bag. However, you seem to be more interested in flexing your childish need for attention by trolling a forum where people merely get into playing classic video games -what a trooper. Thanks for keeping our streets safe there, sheriff.

I'm not even going to address the jabs of kiddie or furry porn because they're just too cliché; talk about tiresome.

> major software company with millions of customers...

How did you arrive here? lol. This is like a bad Twilight Zone script that was never completed. And..oh never mind.

Since you're the only one who went into afib over this, I'll help you out by rephrasing what you obviously missed (and yes, I'll get flamed for this, too).

Here it goes:

Is it prudent to leave a computer with an unsupported OS connected to the internet?

Moogly: You get first dibs and you may want to switch to decaf and get some rest!
You're the one that needs the break. Take the rest of the week off. You have my permission.

Peace. Really. Peace.

Well, to be fair you're the one who titled your post "keeping big brother out of my room."

If you are only going to have:

Win 7
Mame 200
Launchbox

... on the box, and never update MAME or Launchbox... and this computer is going to do NOTHING else, then it's a moot point, as you have no reason to go on the internet.

------------------------------------

If you also plan to go on the Internet on this box... and you have no type of anti-virus or anti-malware installed... and you click on email links that tell you you just one $100,000 dollars... then yeah, that would be bad.

If you keep your other security programs up to date, and don't go to shady websites, then your computer should not be hijacked in the near future.

RELAX and just have fun. Remember, it's all about the games.

Hey, Mr. Do!

The new system will go back into my MAME cabinet so it’s strictly for classic arcade games. However, my earlier system had a handful of some newer non-MAME games. Half-Life II was one in particular; and from what I recall you had to stay connected via your (Steam) account to play it. This of course was roughly 15 years ago and I can’t imagine what exists now. My tastes haven’t changed and unless I’m convinced to try something totally revolutionary it’s going to stay as is but i would like the option to try out some newer stuff if i feel so inclined -it’s going to be powerful enough, so why not?

This box is still in the process of being put together, and I’ve just been seeing info out there about security threats and the like...was just wondering what other Win 7 hold-outs have been doing.

Thanks so much for the input.
Cheers!

Get a free VPN program. I'm using TouchVPN from Microsoft Store. Free. new [Re: Rhetro]

I only use this when I'm using a torrent program. Blocked Charter from seeing what I'm downloading. I got tired of them emailing me saying I'm breaking the rule on downloading movies. So far it works. Have something to do with the open IP.

https://touchvpn.net/#download

By the way. You probably need to check for IP change when you use one. That way you will know it works or not. It will say what country and IP is. This is a good website for checking. https://whatismyipaddress.com/ip-lookup
