problems when adding ROMs directories
#383856 - 10/02/19 03:13 AM

Hi People,
I use sw list, so I have lots of dirs... When adding more dirs to mameui64, I have the following problems, which I'd like to address in upcoming releases, if possible:

1. I click "insert", then I got a dialog with the "my pc" folder, so I navigate to my roms folder "d:\games\mame\roms\", let's say d:\games\mame\roms\standard... OK, and window closed, but if I click "insert" again (to add d:\games\mame\roms\neogeo), I'll get the same dialog from "my pc", and so I'll have to navigate again... and again for a 3rd dir, and so on... After a few, it becomes very irritating. So, request#1... can You please start the dialog not from "my pc" but from the last folder I inserted? This is of course, NOT closing the Dirs window. I just click Insert after Insert, and so on.

2. The Dirs window only show the first 5, and it cannot be resized. After I insert a folder at position #6, or #16, or #60, the focus on the list of folders will move to position #1, so if I'm adding dirs in alphabetical order, I'll have to insert, move the sidebar to the position I was, re-insert, list goes back to pos#1, then I have to move the sidebar yet again, reinsert... and so no... So, request#2... can you please remember the position on the Dirs list so after an Insert, the list will be on the position of the "just inserted" dir?

3. Why do I have to add/insert dirs one by one? Why not make a multiple selection list? with checkboxes? I guess most of the people have a "roms" folder with subdirs below it, with all their roms separated by some criteria. It would be much much simpler and nicer to click Insert, navigate to the roms folders, be presented with the list of dirs, with a checkbox on each of the subdirs, and then I'd select as many as I need.

4. If I add just one new dir, to an existing mameui64, with all the config ok, and then I close the window, mameui64 will perform a new search of roms/games, but for ALL the list... could you make this new search, just incremental? I mean, for only the new added/removed dirs? No need to waste a lot of time rescanning directories that were defined before adding/removing new ones... right?

Thanks a lot!

You don't need to add all the directories. Mame will look recursively.

Just use:
c:\mame\roms
c:\mame\software

Then you can have all your rom zips in the first directory above, and then create subdirectories under \software for all your other machines, so things like:
c:\mame\software\a2600
c:\mame\software\coleco
c:\mame\software\intv
etc.

Then just add c:\mame\roms and c:\mame\software to the ROMS drop down in MAMEUI.

Thanks!

I tried this before, and for some reason it didn't work... Now, I already have mameui64 with lots of dirs... don't wanna lose that just in case I'm doing something wrong... I was looking into the ini folder to see where this dir list is kept, so I'd backup this ini but no luck.

- where is this list mantained?
- is there any "trick" to backup the current config and then just revert back to it

I guess backing up the whole mameui64 dir would do it, but something maybe more efficient?

Thanks again!

Hi... Just tried this on a backup I had on an external drive. Added d:\games\mame\roms, but it didn't do the trick.

On right bottom status bar, I have now 141 machines|37, which is weird, since I have no zips under "roms"... all are under specific subdirs (standard, etc.). They seem to be "machines" (bios?) rather than games...

What could be going on?

Thanks again!
