Where is the "Credit switch"?
#383344 - 08/18/19 06:44 AM

On gamefaqs, there is a FAQ explaning how to unlock two secret characters in the Japanese version of Marvel Super Heroes (https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/arcade/583596-marvel-super-heroes/faqs/681).

The FAQ says you need to hold the "credits switch", and I was wondering what button is that in MAME? Is it the coin key (#5) or is it another key?

I can know I can use pugsy's cheats to select the hidden characters, but I want to check if I can unlock them the "real" way.

#5 is probably what you want. Give it a try? If there are other keys you will find them in the system menu (tab).

I already tried that, that's why I'm asking if #5 is the "credit switch" or if that's another key/button/switch on an actual arcade machine that is not emulated by MAME. I also couldn't find any key named "credit switch" anywhere. Not even on the help doc.

There's another thing and it's the fact that I don't know if this character unlock cheat is even correct, so it's possible #5 is the "credit switch", but the code is not working.

Some machines/cabinets had a literal credit button, where the coins inserted didn't actually trigger as credits until it was pressed. There used to be a Tekken 2 Ver.A like that at my local bowling alley where you had to press the credit button after inserting coins (when coins were inserted the button would light up) before the game itself would credit up, the button was next to the the start button below the monitor. This was around 1996/97 when the game was still relatively new (and yes, the place also had a Tekken 1 in the same cabinet, complete with the ridiculous mouth-opened pose of Marshall Law on the side, same credit button deal on that one too).

If that's not the thing, it could be referring to the 1P/2P start buttons, or maybe even a service credit switch (usually mapped to 9, if MSH actually has one). The button mapped to 5 is usually the coin input only.

The issue here is you need to set the JPN version to Freeplay, HOLD the coin button, then enter the other buttons in a certain order, right?

So I went to check... hit F2 to go into service mode, and choose the first option to test inputs.

Every key that you push registers on that screen... EXCEPT the coin inputs. Hold 5 or 6, and nothing happens.

???

RELAX and just have fun. Remember, it's all about the games.

EXTREMELY long time lurker here, and finally got around to registering. If you look closely at the manual (image located here (https://www.arcade-museum.com/manuals-videogames/M/marvel-super-heroes.pdf) you can see by the pinout that pin R on JAMMA is for service (Free Credit). I have not checked the actual MAME code so I do not know if this connection has been fully registered, but I'm wondering if this may be a clue.

Nothing really too interesting about it. The hardware issues a "Coin Lockout" when in Service Mode. To disregard this board function, there is "-nocoin_lockout" command-line option "coin_lockout 0" in .ini, which should allow it show both coin inputs as they are triggered. Notice if you happen to be running a DEBUG build, you'd see a popup showing "Coinlock disabled Coin" message and with the commands above, you'd read "Coinlock deisabled but broken through Coin" message instead.

The process is not difficult, I just don't know what the "credit switch" is. If it's #5, then fine, but why not say "coin button" if he's playing in MAME?
That's why I think he's referring to an actual physical switch found in the machine. Something that can't be found in MAME.

In all honesty, I think the cheat is fake. There's no way Capcom would put a legitimate and complicated code that requires an Arcade operator to unlock characters, and to not include it in the USA version. Not even for 2 player gaming.
Maybe the code did work in early test versions of the game, but I doubt the final Japanese version has a working code.

But... the dude that made the FAQ described the code with enough detail to make me believe it could be real.

Holy crap it works!

I found this youtube video that explained it a bit better and it worked!

The credit switch is indeed the #5 key. You have to enter the button combination at a medium pace at the character select screen and release the coin button when you're done.

In a real arcade cabinet you have a coin mech that counts the coins you put into the cab, but on the inside of the door there is normally a switch that gives the same signal to the board so the operator can test it.

In mame you press 5. We call it coin, but other people call it credit.
