AppleSauce images
#380904 - 01/28/19 06:13 AM

Antoine Vignau just posted on twitter:

The entire set of flux images that I created during the testing and development of the Applesauce is now available https://archive.org/details/Antoine_Applesauce_Vignau

1684 #AppleII software on 3000+ disk sides.

Shout out to @DiskBlitz, @a2_Canada, @textfiles, @a2_4am

----

Probably some very rare floppies that can be preserved in MAME if converted to woz images.

Fortunately Firehawke is covering the Apple II software floppy list scene at the moment with twitter action examples shown below. The hash/apple2_flop_orig.xml hash file is coming along and will be one of the highlights in the next release.

4AM: This is, of course, called "Impossible Mission II". My apologies. I've updated the
description and the file metadata and reuploaded new .zip files. Thanks to
Firehawke for the report.

Firehawke
On that note, a few of the IA 4AM sets I pulled data from for inclusion in MAME said "Won't run in emulated Apple 2 on site"-- those may need to be rechecked.

4AM: MAME does not fully support the .woz format, specifically around long sequences of 0 bits (a.k.a. "weakbits"). Those images have been successfully verified working in compliant emulators.

qkumba (Peter) knows this problem, bring it up with him, he'll love the reminder

My guess is they (4AM and Firehawke) will catch up to what Antoine Vignau had completed earlier.

As for the Apple II floppy documentation has file: hash/apple2_flop_orig.xml

Here is how I believe things will eventually be set in that hash file.

Operating System section.

Application programs section which will have

a. non-copy protected section
b. copy protected section

Utilities section which will have

a. non-copy protected section
b. copy protected section

Education section which will have

a. non-copy protected section
b. copy protected section

Games and maybe Adult entertainment section which will have

a. non-copy protected section
b. copy protected section

Shareware section

And that will be for covering the original diskettes whether they are copy protected or not.

Then there will likely be another future file hash/apple2_flop_cleancrack.xml
that will only consist of verified 'clean cracks' which most will be 4AM's work

And then a possible third future file hash/apple2_flop_cracks.xml

which will be the documented kiddie like hackers cracks that have appeared since the 1980s etc.

That is how I envision things being handled for Apple II floppy diskette support in MAME.

o/t:

Amazing to see how time has gone by when this hash list system was first envisioned back in January 2010. And Guru's response in the thread is still amusing to read 9 years later.

Apple II woz update new [Re: anoid]
#380921 - 01/30/19 12:43 PM

It looks like a " < -- Education -- > " section will soon get to be added to the
hash/apple2_flop_orig.xml file.

From 4AM's own woz created list...first education diskette saved in a woz format.

Update: Sunburst has fallen. Passport can now convert flux images of Sunburst disks to .woz format

Very cool, though I guess the woz image posted is the 4AM crack using Passport.

I wonder if the flux approach would work for C64 copy protected floppies?

An example of why AppleSauce is arriving barely in time. Saving games from deteriorating diskettes.

Did the disk supernova?

4AM: The bits around the center are just 40 years of deterioration. The game data is stored on the first few tracks, starting at the edge and working inwards.

I forgot WOZ 2.0 was fully supported with previous release made available.

I did notice that Joust WOZ image locks up in MAME after a few seconds. I don't know if this is WOZ or emulation related.

other floppy diskette images new [Re: anoid]

The 5.25" floppy diskette visualizer is catching on with followers that are fans of other computer systems (Atari or C64).

First @option8 made a floppy disk visualizer for Apple II disks; then @16kRAM did it for Atari 8-bits, then @a8bit made it better; then @paulrickards did it for Commodore 64, then @pagetable made THAT better.

They need a 4AM like 'hero' for their Atari games or C64 diskette games to be preserved.
