Subnautica (Free Shit)
#380072 - 12/16/18 06:09 PM

Epic Games launched their own store and they are giving away free games every month. Right now it's Subnautica, in a few weeks it will be Super Meat Boy.

I might play that at some point. I'd prefer not having yet another portal installed though.

It's all about getting you to have an account so they can use your details for advertising tho.

At least on the PC there is competition, unlike on the consoles, where you see almost 10 year old games still at launch price unless you're willing to tie them to a subscription.

The competition does mean that on the PC things can be priced fairly, although yeah, anything that wants to install more 'always running' software on my PC gets am instant 'no' from me (not sure if that's the case here, haven't checked, not really interested)

The amount Steam takes as a cut is daylight robbery, so you can also understand why other developers are going to be lured to stores that (for now) promise to take less.

Yep, competition is usually good for the consumer. We'll see how it all shakes out in the end.

On a side note, Origin has quietly discontinued it's free games program, so that's one thing you can uninstall.

Origin... I don't think I had any of their games. They're EA, so... there may have been one free game I had.

Searching... ah, yeah, Burnout Paradise. From Humble.

Back when Origin first launched their service, they mistakenly gave out a reusable $20 coupon code, which meant you were able to get every game in their entire library that was less than $20 for free. I got a ton of games (and have yet to play more than a handful) that way. After they fixed it, it was nice of them to let everybody keep the games. I guess it wasn't a bad stress test either. As I recall, the site eventually got really slow once everyone figured out the coupon trick.
