Yes, this is perhaps the best known emulation flaw in history. Those games used a hardcoded IC intended for use in home doorbells rather than conventional audio hardware, so it's quite difficult to deal with.

Hi, I thought perhaps that maybe Phoenix and Pleiades h/w was similar. Phoenix sounds great. Pity as the tune makes the game!

I'll add that similar "simple melody" chips are used to play tunes in Time Attacker and one bootleg of Atari Tetris.
Decapping these chips has been proposed, since the melodies are contained in some amount of internal ROM.
