Astro Zone (1980,Taito)
#378852 - 10/07/18 08:44 PM

Astro Zone

i've recently discovered this game, but it seems that it's still not emulated on MAME.
are there some updates on MAME community about this game which i've didn't seen, or the original PCB hasn't been obtained yet, so it isn't possible to emulate it yet?

Of course this is the reason why it isn't emulated. The MAME team is not in the business of hoarding.

ahh ok. thanks for the info.
sad that the PCB hasn't been obtained yet.
it looks like a simple but interesting game.

imo Taito's Astro Zone is going to be one of those hard-to-find pcbs since it was likely only released in Japan.

At this time, either no one from DU community has this pcb and if anyone actually does have the game (ie: pcb and maybe a cabinet too), best odds are someone in Japan that collects games. There are still lots of Japan and other Asian region games that are owned by collectors wanting to make sure the game is kept to only a select few or only for themselves. Way, way too many past examples to mention, but unfortunately one of the recent notable examples was Nintendo's Monkey Magic.

A lot of the items that Smit announces regarding Dumping Union activities on front page usually get preserved in MAME within a reasonable amount of time even though there might be on occasional rare exception such as one of the roms might require a hard-to-find adapter to read out contents of rom or prom.

Besides Bobby Tribble's unMAMEd page, that I see you are already aware of...

Good sleuth/detective work. I wonder if cab is owned by an emufriendly contributor.

The world lucked out with El Fin del Tiempo willing to be allowed to be preserved and emulated in MAME earlier this year and Mr. Goodwraith's long time burden was finally unburdened.

Taito Wall Break cab *edit* new [Re: MASH]
#378884 - 10/08/18 10:08 PM

What timing of this thread when a different Taito game was being discussed. :-)

The cab somewhat reminds me of Midway's TV Basketball cab when looking at cab side artwork pieces, but we are looking at actual first hand photo images of Taito Wall Break which I have never heard of before. The cab is not mentioned in any of the Taito TV series advertising flyers that have been online on TAFA or Dan's Flyer Fever site.

Fortunately, it has already been listed on Undumped Wiki in Taito section

Wall Break (1977/Jan)

At least we now have some actual photo proof of cab's existence.

The "Astro Zone," "Wall Break," and other cabs in these photos are apparently owned and exhibited by the MEGARAGE Arcade Live Bar in Kanagawa prefecture, Kawasaki city, Takatsu Ward, 1-11-8 OKKA 634 Building 3F. MEGARAGE itself seems to be a Taito / Square Enix property; its website is taito.co.jp/megarage. Someone more persuasive than I am should talk to the management about how preserving these games and sharing them with the world could actually increase the number of people who want to visit MEGARAGE and play them on the original machines.

Yes, "lucked out" and "unburdened" do feel like the appropriate words.

ShouTime is the first person that comes to mind. My guess is the better chance is finding a pcb at some shop instead. I'd like to believe the roms / proms already being dumped for Astro Zone by now unless that business doesn't do that for games on location there including any cab or pcb repair work etc.

Taito Wall Break...as for my guesses, it might be a non-cpu game, but the pcb might have a prom or two needing to be dumped. Taito non-cpu games that Andy has collected so far and documented for MAME all seem to have a prom or two.

I didn't have a nearby thesaurus on hand to look for a better word at the moment. :-)

i would do it, but i'm not sure they will respond to a random guy on Twitter who just got recently interested about emulation.
should i try?

Wouldn't recommend it.

You can get a closer look if you add ":orig" to the URLs:

Thanks for that tip. I'll need to remember that feature when it comes in handy.

In this scenario with cab of where it is at etc, it isn't worth it.
