DU: Weekend Update
#378293 - 08/25/18 08:08 PM

ClawGrip dumped a new set of Ikari III.

ClawGrip also dumped a bootleg of Touchdown Fever II.

ClawGrip also dumped PROMs and PLDs from City Connection (set 2).

Porchy added documentation for Dottori-Kun.

ClawGrip dumped a bootleg of Super Pang.

Jorge Silva sent us a dump of Raiden II which I think is the Korea / Hard version.

How Hard are we talking here?

Bullet Hell Hard, Gradius 3 Hard, Ninja Gaiden Hard?

Well there's a single 'harder' version in MAME already, which was weirdly running on Raiden DX hardware not Raiden 2 hardware, that's "raiden2dx" in MAME.

Quite what the story behind that version is nobody actually knows, it definitely looks like a legitimate set, so we can only assume it was built for some kind of competition.

It has significantly harder gameplay, tougher enemies and enemy patterns (eg. the Red tanks on the bridge of the first stage)

I don't know if this new set will be that version tho, as it's running on a regular Raiden 2 board, I suspect Smit simply means that it isn't the 'easy' version, and is instead the standard one, rather than it being the 'hard' version but we'll see.

Osso says according to the driver notes because of the region code and high score table sepia tone it points to Korea / Hard.

so yeah, the regular version, as opposed to the 'easy' version.

the old 'easy / hard' distinction is just something from old dumpers notes, it should really be 'easy / regular' as the version being talked about in this case is the most common revision and one on which almost all ports are based.

the actual 'harder' set is something else entirely as pointed out.

having tested the set, I actually retract the statement

not based on the 'sepia' background, but based on the tanks on the bridge this is actually the same difficulty as the version on the DX board

basically there are 3 rough releases it seems (and multiple revisions of each)

Regular - Sepia hi score background, regular tanks on first bridge
Easy - Coloured hi score background, regular tanks (and generally different enemy placement)
Hard - Sepia hi score background, red tanks on bridge

so yeah, while the evidence given as to why it was a 'hard' set was incorrect, it is infact a harder set.
