How To Make MAME / EmuLoader Show All The Game Preview Snapshots?
#377728 - 07/22/18 10:08 PM

I have a folder called "H:\MAME 0.199 EXTRAs" from Pleasuredone. I can't seem to get MAME to show all the game preview screenshots. I'm only seeing snapshots for just the regular MAME arcade games, but not all the other console games like gameboy, apple 2, etc. (I guess these are what you call "software lists")?

Here's what I have in the mame.ini file:

snapshot_directory H:\MAME 0.199 EXTRAs

Are we supposed to unzip stuff and save it somewhere?

Have you tried...

snapshot_directory "H:\MAME 0.199 EXTRAs"

Paths with spaces need quotes!

What he means is that snaps for software lists are not showing up.
He has a snap_sl.zip (not supported by MAME, is it ?) and seems not want to unzip it into softlist folder names to show snaps.

I personally don't use Emu Loader or the MAME EXTRAs torrent posted by PD (I prefer to keep my PNGs uncompressed and simply audit with AntoPISA's AllProjects DAT)

Another user posted that MAME itself with it's internal UI supports their snap_sl.zip showing pics for software list machines.

So yes, the snap_sl.zip *is* supported by MAME

Well, I'm being told on the Pleasuredome forum that snap_sl.zip is suported by MAME. They're also saying that you don't have to unzip, move, copy, or change anything with the Pleasuredome downloads to get it all working with MAME. But it looks like some Front-Ends have different requirements. So maybe for Emu Loader, you do need to unzip.

I could not find anything about this is MAME's source code.
Does that mean that all other categories also suport this ? titles_sl.zip; cabinet_sl.zip; flyers_sl.zip...

I'll see what can be done to support snap_sl.zip in Emu Loader.

well, I just created a snap_sl.zip and put some images there. Fired up MAME and it does now show any screenshots.

I added some games for a2600 and msx1_cart softlists and MAME's internal UI did not show any image when selecting games like HERO, Asteroids, Keystone Kapers, Goonies.

I assume you must put those images in softlist named sub-folders since it's a single .zip file. The file was located in the same folder as snap.zip.

snap_sl.zip contents

a2600\hero.png
a2600\asteroid.png
a2600\keykaper.png
msx1_cart\goonies.png
msx1_cart\gonniesb.png
msx1_cart\elevator.png

Am I doing something wrong here ?

Did you put path to the zip in the mame.ini?

snapshot_directory "PathTosnap_SL.zip"

Yes, it's the same path used for snap.zip (arcade games).
Other games are showing images, but it's not showing images from snap_sl.zip

Code:

snapshot_directory D:\EmuLoader\snap

It would appear from a quick test here that the PD Mod is either mistaken or we're doing something incorrectly on our ends. I'm getting the same results that you are after some testing.

Well...this is yet another reason why my images are uncompressed anyway :P

I'll attempt to inform them of this.

Change D:\EmuLoader\snap to D:\EmuLoader\snap\snap_SL

The archive itself must be treated like a folder and then it works.

Ok. I just changed the snap path like you suggested and it works. But that's a weird behavior. Arcade snapshots will also have to be a \snap_sl\ sub-folder. I really hate this approach.

MAME should look for snap_sl.zip in any snap folder you choose, without forcing the use of a \snap_sl\ sub-folder in mame.ini.
Sure, you can use multiple paths in snap dir entry, but...

My frontend can only read one snap path from mame.ini, not mulitple paths. I did this for simplicity and to avoid searching zipped image files in multiple folders when scrolling the games list, causing horrendous lag. It would be very fast for unzipped images though.

To support multiple snap paths I would have to rewrite a huge part of the frontend's code.
Since users will use Emu Loader to view images, I guess I can just add support to unzip softlist game images from snap_sl.zip using a single path entry in snap_directory.
Placing snap_sl.zip in the same folder as snap.zip is a much cleaner (and easier) choice.

Thanks for the help B2K24.
