Which joystick do you use to play MAME on PC?
#377271 - 06/28/18 01:52 PM

What kind of joystick do you use to play MAME games on your PC? I'm curious because I have real arcade joysticks (Wico / Industrias Lorenzo) mounted into a pistol case and it's great! But at the same time they are a little big and I was thinking on going to a smaller and more modern joystick, such as the ps4 or xbox ones.

Sanwa arcade controls, Logitech gamepads, or a keyboard.

I play my mame games with a ps4 controllers.

I don't even have a playstation 4.... I just wanted something similar to the super nintendo at first but but also get analog controls and mouse controls as a bonus and it's wireless.

X-Arcade Tankstick with Cherry DX switches and IL sticks.

For "Space Harrier" etc. I use a yoked flight-stick and for rotary games I use an Xbox 360 pad using shoulder buttons for rotation.

A pair of Logitech Dual Action gamepads here, and enough replacement NES conductive button pads to last a lifetime, as Logitech refuses to supply these as they want everyone to buy a brand new controller every time a button stops working due to the rubber pad splitting.

Also, I will reply to as many things as possible just to make sure that $#&%ing Bloodstained topic is pushed back down where it belongs. Which is not EmuChat.

And it works fine with MAME without any input lags? Do you use a special driver for it or something like that?

You need a pc that has Bluetooth support… my motherboard is a asus rog strix z370-e with Bluetooth 4.2 and it works fine.

You can buy a usb Bluetooth adaptor as an option.

I also installed the free program ds4windows running in the background. http://ds4windows.com/

That's all and it works pretty well… I haven't noticed input lag honestly.

Seimitsu sticks are also good, especially for games like Gradius or R-Type and both of those games' many sequels.

Wired USB XBox 360 controllers for me. I almost abandoned my poor custom joystick setup, but going to build another with illuminated buttons using ledblinky

...Since 2001.

All original parts except the encoder. It was replaced several years ago with the USB Encoder Upgrade Kit provided by X-Arcade for USB compatibility.

I still have HotRod SE myself, though I never upgraded it. I don't play MAME much and when I do I usually just plug in my X360 pad. I do have a PS/2 -> USB adapter, but of course that's not ideal. I'm surprised X-Arcade is still selling the upgrade kit. $40 is a bit steep for me though.

I finally got it some months ago as PS/2 was causing some kind of pile-up effect (massive input lag) on the old computer that runs my cab.
The "conversion kit" is actually the board + a bunch of wires that you have to run to your controls. I thought it was going to have a compatible pinout and that you'd just switch the encoder board, but really this kit could be used to interface with any controls you'd want.
One of the wires turned out to be too short to reach both side buttons too, I had to extend it a bit.
