gif animator EDIT
#376849 - 06/14/18 03:08 AM

does anybody still do gif animation? i forget the software i used back in the day.

i did some mame frame grabs to try today, but most of the software these days doesn't have a few key abilities i recall having; mainly, cropping and removing selected colors to transparent on all frames concurrently.

anybody still dabblin?

I distinctly remember using gimp. Then again, I suffer from CRS more and more, so...

Found the ones I posted though. Chun-Li and Cammy

I used GiMP once just to see if I could do one- someone had requested one from Little Nemo. He disappeared from here a long time ago, and now I use it on a comic forum since, you know, Little Nemo was a comic long before it was an animated movie or video game.

I used to use imagemagick back in the day...
http://www.imagemagick.org/Usage/anim_basics/

I remember using PaintShopPro 5 to come up with an optimized palette and then manually applying it to each image (frame) before combining them together.

I think I've also used ffmpeg in a way similar to imagemagick by feeding it a series of images.

The whole process was tedious as hell. I think I have my workflow on an old computer somewhere.

Here's some of my handiwork. I made a lot of versions of the last one because I was trying different techniques to get the file size down.

To make these, I had to decompile SWF animations and remove the elements that I didn't want in my animated GIF. I fed the new SWF through a tool (can't remember the name) that converted it into a series of bitmaps. I used imagemagic to resize and crop the bitmaps. I then spent a lot of time fiddling with various palette optimizations before combining the images together into an animated GIF.

I don't do as many now as I used to, but I've always used Photoshop. Its a little tricky, but once you get the hang of editing frame and layers it's no problem.

i loaded a few gifs into photoshop, and it looked cool, but i couldn't figure out how to remove selected colors from all frames at once. when i highlighted more than one layer in the gif, the "select color range" and other things get grayed out.

i love to hear your outlined process.

funny story... new [Re: jopezu]
#376883 - 06/15/18 06:59 AM

about an hour into the first gif i created last night (the hour mark should have been a clue), i was like "goddamn... this old battletoads arcade used some COLORS! i thought these things were like 256 to 1024 colors onscreen!". i was sitting there removing colors for like 40 minutes from the background until i realized...

the fucking import wizard had stretched the frames slightly, and the program interpolated the raw palette into some decent multiple of itself. i should have realized the arcade game wasn't putting out that many shades of an almost exact midnight blue. that box has now been unchecked. this second gif took a few minutes to make. lmao

Dude, the memories. I used to do this a lot in my spare time with Fireworks (before Adobe bought it) usually with some optimization in ImageReady.

I left my ISP for a short while. Figured they would have taken down the website I made ~15 years ago, but there it is, lol

Even found a Gunbird rip I still had on an old hard drive (I saw your other thread).

#376932 - 06/17/18 03:04 AM Attachment: sfa3_zangief.gif 28 KB (0 downloads)

does anybody know if there's a design or technical reason why lots of arcade games don't use the same colors in both the characters and backgrounds? i'm thankful for this when creating gifs, and every now and then some colors are used in both the characters i'm trying to rip as well as the backgrounds i'm trying to get rid of. creativity is often required.

other games (killer instinct, etc) do not play by this rule, and the universal color palette is used liberally throughout the entire frame. those are hard (if not impossible) to rip cleanly.
