Ready to pull hair out

Literally. I'm trying to create a couple of game specific ini files for some Atari 5200 games to have different joystick saturation settings using latest MAME.
I am no newbie to MAME, on my arcade cabinet I would just title the ini the same as the romname, drop in ini folder, loads it perfect every time.
But I'm trying to make one for gorf for the 5200 and it just won't load it. I copied the analog settings I wanted from my mame.ini from the home folder, titled it gorf, dropped it ini folder, nothing.
Because I'm using consoles instead of arcade games, does a sub folder called "a5200" need to be made in the ini folder then gorf.ini dropped in their? What am I doing wrong??

INI files for system softlists? Is that even possible? The documents don't mention anything about that.
The lower you could go is a5200.ini and that should affect every game under that system.

The only option you have is to create a a5200.ini with settings you want. It must be in the root of your "inipath" just like for any other arcade game. But doing this will affect all Atari 5200 games, not just the one you want.
