.dat files / .dat.zip files ???
#375693 - 04/18/18 04:43 PM

I'm super new to all of mame. I'm slowly picking up on the different tools used (clrmamepro/bittorrent) to gain romsets and downloads but:

What I'm trying to figure out is:

1) why is a .dat file used for mame roms rather then a torrent.
2) what do I do with the dat file to access the roms?
3) is a .dat.zip the same as a .zip and can be extracted with common 7zip program? Then what because now its an xml
4) clrmamepro ? if I'm not converting/splicing/rebuilding/downgrading/upgrading/or cherry picking my romset do I need to use this at all?
5) how can I get this .dat.zip file to open, show me romsets so I can then place them in a folder to use in mame?
6) can I seed .dat files back after opening with my bittorrent program?

thanks

You don't need a datfile (no matter if xml or deprecated format) to use cmpro with mame...and yes, it's an auditing tool for your romsets. You don't need it if you want to update your sets manually

so I'm guessing I'm looking in the wrong place for my romsets as I have not found any that are torrents. the files folder shows in my bittorrent but its empty because its either .dat or .dat.zip.

I'm I missing something?: Is this a file I unzip then rebuild the romset (xml) within clrmamepro?

The only set available is the newest. Are there certain restrictions I have as a new member that I cant access old sets?

Thanks

First off this is the wrong place to talk about torrents as stated in the forum rules. And when it comes to them, usually the latest MAME version romset is the only one working. If you want to use older versions of MAME, you would need to rebuild them with an auditing tool using the latest MAME version ROMs and another torrent with the word "rollback". It contains hashed files by MAME discarded through its lifespan. You are on your own looking for those torrents, it's recommended to use ClrMAME Pro for such task.

With that said, expect Haze ranting about how is a bad idea to use older versions of MAME in the following posts.

I thought I was being pretty careful as to not break any rules. Please elaborate so I don't continue to make that mistake.

You can find them at the top right of this page.

The first two are:

Quote:

1) Do NOT request OR post roms, rom sites, missing files, chd's, rom/chd diffs, or bios's. And don't private message people you don't know asking for them either. It's both illegal & annoying, and won't be tolerated.

2) Do NOT request OR in any way discuss warez/warezing, cracks, keygens, ISO's, etc.

Basically we can't talk about where you should get your ROMs or how. We can help your about how you can audit your ROMs, yet you would get better support about that on the official ClrMAME forum.

Addressing to some of your questions I should add:
- ClrMAME audits with either an independent dat file or an XML file generated from a MAME executable program. It doesn't help you to download ROMs.
- ClrMAME reads compressed files (.ZIP, .7z, .RAR), so it doesn't matter if you drag a compressed file or a XML file as long as it's valid.
- People usually audit their ROMs first so they can save transfer bandwidth and avoid duplicated or unneeded files taking space.
- If you can't find seeds about an older version of MAME, your best choice is to audit your ROMs with the desired version and grab the missing files from a rollback collection. You'll need a ROM manager for that.
