Star Wars: may the WIP be with you
#375018 - 03/22/18 05:54 PM Attachment: yoda.jpg 58 KB (0 downloads)

ObiWan HazeObi just let me know that SailorSat is going to send us the needed chip from Wing War which is the same needed chip used on Star Wars Arcade, for decapping. So we have all the needed Model 1 chips secured now.

Does this mean that Star Wars Arcade will be fully emulated in a close future?

Thanks SailorSat for letting the Mame team use your Wing War chip. It's great news for all the Star Wars fans & in a galaxy so far way it will be fully playable too.

Here here. Virtua Formula at Blackpool Pleasure beach (in UK) was the best.

it means there is a very good chance of being able to extract the Coprocessor code from the chip, which will make Star Wars emulation possible.

It doesn't mean it will happen 'soon', and it doesn't *guarantee* success, the decapping process takes a while and requires a suitable time slot to do, the data entry and verification takes a long time, and OG has already had to rewrite the CPU core for Virtua Racing to run it's real CoPro code, so there could still be bugs to iron out even once the program is acquired.

For all we know this part could have EPROM instead of Mask rom, and while that is very unlikely, again can't 100% rule it out. If that turns out to be the case new techniques will have to be considered.

It is however an absolutely essential step if we want to see Star Wars, Wing War and NetMerc properly emulated. The correct co-processor functionality is essential to those games behaving as they should.

Emulation is science, this is part of the discovery process.

What kind of data entry is involved? I type 100 wpm accurate.

> What kind of data entry is involved? I type 100 wpm accurate.

I type around 130 wpm with around 99.5% accuracy, fast enough that some typing-test sites have actually required me to take an extra test to prove I'm not a bot.

Having said that, the kind of data entry doesn't require speed so much as accuracy. You're presented with a photo of an 8-by-8 region of bits taken via a microscope, with some bits "filled" and some bits empty. The task is to type into a box to the right of the image which bits are filled and which are empty. The thing is, sometimes a bit will have a fleck of dust, or some other occlusion that makes it not 100% easy to tell whether it's a 1-bit or a 0-bit, so you need to be paying attention.

Just keep an eye out for when one of the "Typing Monkey" projects gets posted, I'm sure between the two of us we can make short work of anything that gets posted.

Does that mean complete emulation of the co processor chip will also fix the graphical bugs in Virtua Racing as well as the sound bugs in Star Wars Arcade?

I'm not aware of any graphical bugs in VR apart from those present on the original hardware (it's early 3D hardware)

as for sound, that's entirely unrelated.

What is it about Star Wars Arcade that sets it apart from all the others?
There is just something about it that is cool and feels more like the Star Wars universe than other arcade titles.
