Ghosts n' Goblins: bad sound quality
#375012 - 03/22/18 03:50 PM

Hello there!
There is an annoying problem from an old favorite which is the reason I signed up...

Ghosts n' Goblins does not have good sound quality, compared with FinalBurn Alpha emulator.
With FBA the sound is clear, which is not the case with MAME.

I tried to tweak the sound options first (sample rate, latency...), but I think it's more an emulation problem since nothing resolved it.

In MAME, the sound seems fuzzy, and some high pitched noises are not heard (example: sounds 25, 2F and 3C in service mode).
Another example is the credit sound (35 in service mode), the echo effect is not the same between MAME and FBA, and there was also some sort of 'humming' sound right after, if my memories are good.

Psychic 5 has also the similar sound problem.

Anyway
http://mamedev.emulab.it/haze/pics2018/gngmame.flac
http://mamedev.emulab.it/haze/pics2018/gngfba.flac

there are slight differences in the sound, with MAME having a bit of a DC offset, but overall I think most of the difference is probably MAME emulating the limits of the original chip where maybe FBA isn't because it's using older cores.

if that is what you're hearing, there's nothing you can do, no.

beyond that I'm not hearing a major difference

If you're hearing something worse than the examples the best I can recommend is extract the latest current version of mame from mamedev.org into a fresh folder, with no options changed, and try that.

I think FBA has started adding some 'better than original quality' resamplers into some of the sound cores which MAME isn't going to do, but afaik this isn't one of them either.

I think so, but I believe that FBA is closer to the original sound even if it's not exactly the same.

I tried with the latest (0.196), and it's the same thing.

I know that FBA is of the emulators that improves gameplay/sound quality instead of staying true to the originals, it's just that when I tried FBA, it sounded closer to the original from my memories (if i'm not mistaken, too bad I can't compare with the original).

Anyway, I made comparisons with your sounds:

gngfba.flac:

gngmame.flac:

I also recorded the same sound using MAME 0.196:

The wave line is lower in MAME, it is the normal behavior?

That's the DC offset that Haze mentioned.

That's a common thing in MAME, I noticed it with the AY-3-8910 output years ago when the Aristocrat MK4 slots were first emulated. Sound output isn't always centered on 0 and MAME replicates that.
