I’d move it up sooner, to 1987 with the launch of its first non-music related program, the gameshow “Remote Control.”
The novelty of watching music videos was wearing off, and that was the first step in abandoning its brand identity as MUSIC television, and trying to just remain popular in any way possible, music related or not.
Today, MTV is just another cable channel among hundreds just like it trying to stay hip and televant to young viewrs. Sometimes, for longevity, winning isnt about being #1, but is about being #1 in your nitch. What’s MTV’s nitch? Literally, they define themselves by describing a target audience “primarily teenagers, particularly high school and college students.” Hardly an identity. That demographic could also describe the target audience for a textbook distributor, or sellers of athleticwear. Way to go, MTV, you are beating out a jockstrap supplier in your quest to master your target demographic.

I can see the argument of going away from music videos being their downfall but for me I enjoyed it as long as they showed a decent amount of videos and the rest was good. I enjoyed Remote Control (at the time) and Liquid TV and the Brothers Quay stuff. But then it lamed sometime in the mid 90s and since then probably the only good thing they've had is Jackass.

I'd say it happened when they put people willing to jump sharks on their lineup.

Early 90's for me, I guess 1992. I didn't mind Remote Control but all I cared to watch were the videos, not the other crap.

I was thinking that came out way later than 92. I guess I just did a good job at ignoring it. Crazy.

You might be recalling the start of "Road Rules" in 1995. But it all (unfortunately) started with "The Real World" in 1992.

Agreed. Prior to that, they did their annual Spring Break thing, but that was only for a week. Once Remote Control hit the air, we had to deal with frat-boy cheesiness EVERY day. Then, thanks to their policies, music videos ceased being about stylishness and started being about pissing conservatives off at any cost.
I downloaded just about every early- to mid-1980s music video I could find and made my own virtual channel complete with bumpers to replicate what MTV was like in its golden age.
