It looks like there is some work getting done on Model 2 in MAME

Re: Model 2 nostalgia for the "new batch" new [Re: Smitdogg]
#374478 - 03/08/18 11:06 PM

"new batch" was the given description for the newcomers/new posters back in old MW era where the "Welcome to Hell lurkers" banner was displayed on Loonybin forum when it was crazy then.

Two specific dated achievements in MAME although there are many others.

06-10-2012 first non-cpu game that is finally given green light to be supported and not removed unlike first version of Pong done in 1999.

03-08-2018 first officially considered working Model 2 game

Nostalgia post from (04/18/14) to remind the amusing moments in old MAME.net era days when it was April Fools 2002 and what took place on old MAME.net back then. It looks like Model 2 April Fools will now be put to pasture. Maybe someone will do a new one for Taito Type X hardware?

*copied post*

--
..for any of the long time emulation followers that remember the 2002 April Fools joke that Gridle had pulled with Model 2 wip update on old MAME.net web site.

For those that had never visited old MAME.net web site, the site maintainer "Santeri S. / Gridle" would type up MAME wip moments so users could see what was completed over a few days and maybe what to expect in a future MAME release. For April Fools day in 2001 Gridle did a light-hearted wip update that made fun of MAMEdevs, but it was clever and well done without getting users upset.

For April Fools day MAME wip update in 2002, Gridle had posted a Model 2 emulation update that showed 'doctored' images of Model 2 games running in MAME. The chat forums were filled with lots of over-excited fans waiting to try Model 2 emulation in a future release of MAME. When it was discovered later in the day that it was an April Fools prank by Gridle, there were several upset "kidz" that were dismayed that it was a joke by Gridle. A few posted swearing so the forum had to be cleaned up with a few posts having to be deleted.

Model 2 games were not emulated until another few more years had passed...maybe around 2004 or 2005 iirc.

I thought it was a clever April Fools stunt that Gridle pulled in 2002, but not a surprise that some users were to react like that regarding the 2002 April Fools prank of Model 2 being emulated because in 2001 when CPS-2 was first emulated by using XOR files created by Razoola there was huge excitment because an emulator "finalburn" was running some of the CPS-2 games. When the author (Dave) decided to stop doing any more supporting of CPS-2 games, the "kidz" just went nuts with the usual "internet-type" threats on Dave and any others involved with emulator "finalburn" back around spring 2001.

Glad that is now ancient history and most of the "spastic troublemaker kidz" back then have long left and moved on.

That's really good news as I can't remember the last time model 2 emulation progress was mentioned. I thought it was one of Mame's 2 steps forwards & 3 steps back project every time it got looked at.

Is there a list of model 2 games anywhere ?

What is the story behind Taito Type X ? As your mentioning april fools jokes as I heard that a grumbled x employee had leaked all the stuff for people to use some kind of loader to run all the games & i've seen some videos but don't understand what's what as it's got to be a pc inside the machine or something close.

Thanks I see which one's they are now. Why has model 2 been so hard to emulate is it because they got some kind of 3d shading done & the way they use different camera angles ?

Model 2 driver improvements of this magnitude are a really big deal and a huge accomplishment. I agree with gregf that they rank way up there with Pong emulation in historical importance over the past half decade or so, and undoubtedly just as challenging and hard-won. BIG thanks especially to Kale but also Olivier, Elsemi and others - as always, hopefully anyone enjoying this stuff will keep in mind the hard and clever work they poured into it.

So does this mean the more attention focused on it now by us, the less work will be done on the driver in the future? xD

>>Maybe someone will do a new one for Taito Type X hardware?

>What is the story behind Taito Type X ?

The sentence was a sarcasm comment (unfunny humor), but nothing against the newer games or anything specific. It was if someone had lots of spare time to create or reuse actual screen images and make it appear as if a game was actually running in MAME. That is what Santeri S. / Gridle (old MAME.net web site maintainer) actually did way back in 2002 and his photoshop and excellent editing work actually fooled dozens of users that those users became upset that Gridle fooled them that day back in 2002.

The source maintenance way back in those days was usually sent in to a single lead maintainer (none of this online source viewing fancy stuff users can take for granted) or users can compile their own builds before an official release. Any screen snap showing an improvement was huge news back then where users then could comment with "oooohs" and "ahhhs".

This was where Gridle could take advantage of knowing that and create some phony, but realistic Model 2 game images and it fooled a fair amount of users in 2002. It was a pretty smart and bold stunt that could be gotten away with compared to these past 6 years in which source is now online and users could quickly verify that Gridle was pulling an April Fools joke.

What Gridle did then could not be done in this day and age......unless someone that has Gridle's talent could make it look like Entertainment Science's Bouncer appears emulated in MAME in some future April Fools stunt. :-) *kidding*

It's cool to see Elsemi still involved (or is it just his findings from the Model 2 Emulator)?

Is it at all likely the Model 2 Emulator might see any more updates, or is it more likely MAME is the future for Model 2? M2Emu has force feedback, high-def, texture exports, etc, so it's still useful, but the games do have issues with emulation outstanding.

He's around somewhere, helped us get Virtua Fighter for decapping a little while ago. I think the reason he stopped working on emulators a few years ago is he became a Sega employee.

Wing War, Star Wars Arcade, Netmerc use the same chip needed

We'd have to find a Wing War for sale because the others would be too expensive unless a millionaire or billionaire wants to fund it. I haven't seen any of the 3 for sale for any price since we started looking.

It just seems like a couple months ago. I was impressed with Santeri's / Gridle's work of how he made images appear running in MAME. In one of the posts at the time on old MAME.net Gridle explained how he created the images. It was a bit involved iirc.
