Hi all,
I built an arcade cabinet and was using a raspberry pi with retropie as the brain for the arcade.
I have found that it is underpowered and does not play a lot of the games and have found it to be unstable. For example, right now it is not booting, this may be because my kids sometimes probably unplug it without shutting down. I have reimaged the PI in the past and it still happens. I am ready to move on to something else that will both be more stable and play more of the games (e.g. Nintendo Game Cube etc).
I have done some research online and am trying to navigate the confusing world of MAME and all the possible front ends etc. That research landed me here. I'm hoping to get some basic questions answered:
1. Is MAME the backend for the arcade system, regardless of the front end? 2. Are there recommendations for the front end? Obviously this web site is one of them. Is this the best one to use. I'm hoping for as straightforward an install and configuration as possible including clear documentation. I don't need it to be the fanciest thing out there and don't plan on customizing it significantly, I'm looking more for ease of install, documentation and stable
3. Can I get Mame and the front end running and stable on this system: AMD A6 4400M APU with Radeon HD Graphics 2.70GHZ
Running windows 8.1
4GB Ram, x64 based processor
It is an old laptop I have lying around, it would be great if I could get it running well on this, if not, Im willing to invest a few hundred on a PC.
Any help is greatly appreciated. If there are resources I should read up on, please let me know.
Thanks!
Nathan

Laptop is faster than that Raspberry Pi. Use Raspberry Pi for web browsing and everything else. Not good for MAME because you only be playing older games. All the later games will lag to death.
Laptop you will need Directx extra files install. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35
MAME can be download from here. http://mamedev.org/release.php
MAME does have a front end build in which I used most of time. Unless you want to use another front end. Your choice.
Can't help you with the ROM's though.

Be sure read on the MAME screen on each game before reporting broken or any other issue.

Yes, MAME is always what runs the arcade games. On the Pi it's a version of MAME that's old enough to get a driver's license, and on a PC you can generally run current.

LaunchBox and GameEx are two popular choices for that kind of setup.

That processor is going to be marginal for MAME and it won't run Dolphin (the Gamecube backend) well at all since it's single-core.
