3 MAME Errors
#373661 - 02/03/18 10:34 PM

Hello,

Recently I have been having trouble running MAME. When I try to run the command line version, I get the following errors:

Unable to create the Direct3D device (8876086C)
Unable to initialize Direct3D 9
Fatal error: Unable to complete window creation

I did a fresh install of 194 on my desktop and it works. I copied the entire directory to my arcade harddrive (usb - it is the same letter everytime) and I get the same errors on the USB drive.

Can anybody help with my I would get those errors on the USB drive and not on my desktop?

Thanks,
Jim

Did you try googling those exact specific errors in 3 separate instances?

I've seen this post hundreds of times and it's starting to be asked almost on a daily basis.

What O/S and hardware do you have? What video card?

Try installing the DirectX 9.0c redist package. Around 95MB in size.

If you're on Windows 7, it probably wouldn't hurt to install the Platform Update for Windows 7 too if you haven't already done so...

Sorry for the late response, but the flu has hit our house pretty hard.

I haven't looked for all 3 errors at once, but will do so now.

I have a Surface Pro 4 with Intel HD Graphics 520 with 4G.

Thanks,

Jim

The problem went away for a few weeks and now has returned. I can run a separate version of MAME in a different folder. I have tried to update everything suggested, but nothing seems to work.

I have Googled all three errors at once and also separately, but to no avail. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Jim

It can be a permissions problem. Maybe you put the mame folder or exe in the root usb directory. Create a new directory in the usb and put the mame folder there. Try if it's working.

I tried that and nothing has changed. Anything else?

I had the same problem a few months ago.

At first, I thought it has to do with Direct-X.
So I searched a few forums and found a solution:
If I turn off "Use hardware acceleration" from the DirectDraw tab from the Direct-X control panel, then MAME runs fine.

However, doing this breaks other games (i.e. MegaPlex) that I wanted to play.

Luckily, in the end, I found a solution that works for both.
Here's what I did and hopefully someone also find it useful:

In the MAME.ini file (if you don't have one, run "mame -cc" to create one),
in the "OSD VIDEO OPTIONS" section, change the video line to:

video opengl

Then save the MAME.ini file.
After that, MAME works.
