Steering Problem with Pole Position

I don't know how this happened or how this is even possible.
I used to be able to finish a game, but now I can't because my steering controls become unusable at the race. It's fine during the practice lap but at the race, it'll become loose and imprecise. It'll easily veer off into the grass.
I know this isn't the bug reporting site, but could someone please check this out who either uses the mouse or has a Wiimote?
Tested with polepos, poleposj, poleposa1, poleposa2.
My settings are joystick_deadzone 0.0 joystick_saturation 1.0
And Dial Sensitivity is set to 1 in the tabbed options.
The only thing I've really played with are the Dipswitch settings, which I don't totally understand (how they affect top speed, mainly) but it's usually 4 laps 120 seconds Extended Rank G Practice Rank C If that makes any difference?

You’ll need to look at the manual to see how dipswitch settings affect speed. Higher speeds are more difficult to control.
Controls feel fine for me (I have the highest speed, shortest bonus time set).

Ok, well I can see exactly how the dip settings limit the max speed now (it's Extended Rank A-H with G and H capping at 244 mph) but this is for both practice and race, so it doesn't get any faster once you start the race. The controls should be the same? I'm really lost.

I haven't used a version of MAME newer than v.170, but the problem always was that the game was meant to be played with a 360 degree wheel that had no real center and could spin endlessly.
When you wreck, the game resets the center point. This isn't a problem for a 360 degree wheel. But if you're holding an analog control all the way left when you crash, that's the new center and you cant turn any further left.
In my experience, the game just isn't playable with analog (potentiometer based) controls.

Yeah, I wouldn't try it with anything analog. The Wiimote isn't amazing but it works for that first lap. The sharp corner is a bit of luck with the timing and the grouping of the cars but I was getting some ok 56's with it.
After that it's like it's badly calibrated and pointless playing. I'm not really going to get to know what it should be like unless I find an arcade (extremely unlikely) or just had better controls. But thanks for all the replies.
