Official Artwork?
#373102 - 01/15/18 12:08 AM

What exactly does it take for some of this "Other" artwork to be considered "Official"?

I don't think I've ever actually seen any parameters laid out before, (Sorry if I missed/forgot about it over the years) besides Mr. Do's approval of course! Just curious...

And while we're on it, does the official artwork include non-arcade, mechanical, handheld, home systems & such too? Is the MESS standard different for those types or how is it handled?

Pessimist: Oh, this can't get any worse!
Optimist: Yes, it can!

It's not completely in writing, yet, but official would be "restoring/recreating actual artwork as originally used when a game was released." This would also include faithful recreations of physical hardware for non-arcade stuff. e.g. Steel Tiger's recent Game Gear and GBA... I would consider that official.

Unofficial would be "I'm making artwork for a game, because I'm annoyed by the black space on the left/right side of the screen." e.g. most of the "widescreen" artwork that is all the rage today, which is completely un-customizable, because all of the elements of the arcade cabinet (marquee, bezel, control panel, etc.) are combined in one image. Not that any of that artwork is "bad," because the good ones are amazing... but it's not something I'm going to be adding to my site.

And yes... there's always the "but Mr. Do thinks this unofficial artwork is cool enough" exception. e.g. some of Nightvoices bezels for games that only had generic black bezels, but were created within the spirit of that game, with consideration to the cabinet that game came in. Those will be added.

I have a lot of updating to do this year. Things are going to start getting back to normal on the artwork front in 2018. As soon as I finish up this last thing on Pole Position, I'm going to get the next release ready, then the next release, etc.

(iow... I've been spending my spare time on other things the past couple years... this is all going to be artwork time, again).

RELAX and just have fun. Remember, it's all about the games.

Thanks for the quick answer, & Great! That's pretty much exactly what I wanted see & hear.

I know I'm kind of nit-picky about some things but I'd like to keep my MAME stuff "Official" as it can be, artwork too. I too like a lot of the Xtra artwork people have been doing but there is just too much of it & a lot of it not very accurate, but it fills some peoples needs/wants for sure.

Heck I usually turn off the artwork to actually play the games but I like having it there & on to start with & to be able to show the younglings what a real arcade/system looked like back in the day! (The cab shots help with that too of course!) Ah nostalgia!

I'm also glad RL has settled down with enough time for a full time return to MAME for you! It's been awhile for sure....

Thanks again & GL catching back up!
