modelines and AVGA5000 on win7?
#372475 - 12/29/17 01:35 PM

Hi everyone, my name is Jay, an arcade enthusiast from France,

Short version of my question/problem is below:
Can I add *MANUALLY CUSTOMED* modelines on an AVGA5000 running on win7?

Long version:
I am currently using and old Athlon3200+ and an old ATI card to run my arcade cab. Motherboard A7N8X deluxe. Jpac with original old school Hantarex arcade monitor at 15Khz.

Soft wise :
WinXP
Soft15Khz
Custom ATI drivers with PERSONALIZED -important- modelines (for those in the 'know', there's a specific parameters called PixelRatio, not sure I remember the term correctly though, which prevented some modelines to work on some old ATI card models. So because I am an enthusiast I had all these 'faulty' modelines reworked so each of the games I emulate run at exactly the right resolution and right frequency.
ShmupMAME 42 (I won't use another version, this one is the one that suits my exact needs and wants)

My problem is the following.

I developed my own FrontEnd because none that I could find would suit my needs. The problem is the technology I used does not run on winXP, need win7 or more to run that FrontEnd.

Upgrading my PC to win7 means that I WON'T be able to use my current graphic driver and my modelines will go down the drain as well.

So far, when I launch any game with shmupmame42 it switches to the right resolution as it has an option to autoswitch to the best resolution when launching a game among the res that your videocard+driver can output.

I've seen the new AVGA5000 model and that seem to be the right call because it has driver support for win7 and accept very low res on a 64bit OS, however I did not see any indication whether I could CREATE and ADD my own modelines (i.e resolutions) TO the driver. I am confident that the preset modelines would 'mostly' be OK but I am also confident that some games won't run at the exact xres/yres/frequency and I am kind of hardcore about that : P.

Can anyone give me some intel or point me in the right direction about whether or not you can add/change the modelines of an AVGA5000 running on win7 please?

Cheers and happy holidays to every one,
--Jay

The ArcadeVGA5000 is a great product and is one of the easiest plug-and-play solutions available but as far as I know, you cannot change the built-in resolutions.

Instead of Soft15KHz, have you looked at CRTEmudriver 2.0?

It's normally used with GroovyMAME (which you should also really consider using instead of shmupmame42) but I know that people use it with other emulators.

If you want to explore using CRTEmudriver 2.0, make a post about what you're trying to do over on the GroovyMAME support forum and I'm sure someone will eventually reply with useful info...

Cheers for the answer.

CRTemudriver is actually something I found out about during my research but I don't know as of know if that'll do the trick...

I guess more research is on the way : )
