The PGM2 audio chip is an absolute beast of a thing, which I believe can decompress multiple MPEG streams on the fly. It's a pretty baller chip, and it seems that they're making full use of it in the new version.
Haze posted a screenshot of MAME's internal profiler when running PGM2, and roughly 60% of the time spent processing each frame was spent handling the audio chip. Only 8% was spent on emulating the CPU.

that's since been optimized with a nice little lookup table, but yeah, the chip plays multiple mpeg streams and unlike the Cave cv1k games which use similar, IGS actually used a decent size sample rom (32MBytes) rather than the rather pathetic 8MBytes the Cave games use meaning the samples don't sound so bad.
