I always wondered how Jojo's Bizarre adventure got away with using band and song names in the manga. Wouldn't that have been considered trademark infringement? Or are Japan's copyright laws looser than the US's?

Basically, yes. They're much more okay with parodies and references like those.

That didn't stop the US rights holders from fucking up all the names in English though.

Well they could've gotten permission and license by the Music industry for the US version. Then shorten those down.

Doing so would've been ridiculously expensive, between paying for the use of multiple band names, band songs, and then we have the multitude of record companies involved.
