Setting Neo Geo to home console mode
#370724 - 11/02/17 01:01 PM

How do i set up the Neo Geo games to home console mode in MAME
inside the mame.ini file or inside the mame menu? Setting it
from command line i know. I prefer setting one time to console
for all games at the same time.

You need the aes.zip BIOS for the home console version (Neo Geo AES), and you run them as software list items. From the command like it would be like "mame aes kof2000", or you can select the Neo Geo AES system from the menu, then choose the cartridge to load.

Which bios option exactly should i select from the bios mame list when starting a game? I have UniBios and MVS. Also i can't find any dip switch for home Arcade mode switch in the
game's dip switches menu or the mame's menu.

As Vas already said you must use the 'AES' machine, not the 'NeoGeo' machine.

the hardware is different (Aes lacks things like the watchdog timer) MAME treats them as different machines.

other emulators use hacks to represent them as a single machine, MAME does not, the original machine did not determine this with dipswitches which is why you don't see any in MAME for it.

'mame aes samsho4' from the commandline for example will launch the home / aes version of samurai shodown 4.

Wow, I didn't know this. I always thought the main difference between MVS and AES were the video & audio output (since a TV would not use your typical arcade connectors) and a different bios.

Like everyone said NEOGEO AES is your best option. However if you still insist on using NEOGEO MVS you can use the UniBIOS to hack them into AES versions.

Create a "neogeo.ini" with the following information so you don't have to select the correct BIOS every time you boot a game:

Code:

#
# CORE MISC OPTIONS
#
bios unibios32

When you boot your game and the Universe BIOS splash screen appears hold A, B and C buttons simultaneously (your controller buttons assigned to that inputs, not your 'A', 'B', and 'C' keys). There you can change the region and mode to console. You still need to set console mode for every game, it's a process of seven button presses only once and forget about them.

If you have doubts consult the manual on the official page.

No, there are other subtle differences too, it's how some of the protection schemes work even - the MVS codepaths in a number of the mid-late period games will sit in a loop waiting for the watchdog timer to reset them, if that doesn't happen they'll display a 'for use only on original MVS hardware' screen (or sometimes break the game in subtle ways) once that check has passed the status is saved in sram so it doesn't happen again tho. This was done to prevent AES owners using an MVS bios or otherwise hacking their AES system to run the games in MVS mode.

That's why some of the neogeo arcade games in MAME will do the reset process twice on startup, the additional reset is the one done by the watchdog timer.
