Blade Runner 2049 (no spoilers)
#370192 - 10/07/17 09:50 PM

Just got back from seeing Blade Runner 2049. It's a must-see, and a damn fine movie.

I don't want to get into the plot (it's enthralling), or the characters (beautifully acted), or even anything about the story at all (solid). Just on a technical/production level.

One thing that so many sequels get wrong is that they spend practically half of the movie going back over the events of the first movie and otherwise trying to fill in first-time viewers. On top of that, many sequels put in way too much effort to keep putting in little winks towards the audience in the form of references to the first movie, as if to say, "Hey! Yeah! There was this first movie! Yeah! You remember the first movie? Hey! Remember what this is a sequel to? Oh yeah, remember that this happened?"

There's none of that garbage in Blade Runner 2049. It's a movie where you essentially must have seen Blade Runner first, because it spends next to no time re-treading old ground, it takes for granted (in a good way) that you've already seen Blade Runner, as a sequel should. The few direct references to the first movie are both relevant to the plot and done tastefully.

When I first saw the trailer I was concerned that it was going to go in a far more action-oriented direction, and I'm pleased to know that my concern was unfounded. It was most likely just a bad day at the video editing station for the person who made the trailer, or it was made by some random marketing person with no real connection to the series. On the contrary, the movie has plentiful moments with zero dialogue, letting you feast your eyes and ears on shots of apocalyptically beautiful future-noir cityscapes and a phenomenal soundtrack. It honors its predecessor in every way.

Overall, it's pretty clear that the writer of the movie was someone who truly loved the first one, Ridley Scott was allowed to do what he does best, and in general it seems like there was little to no meddlesome interference from studio executives trying to get a credit on the movie.

Go see it. I saw it tonight with a group of friends at this one theater in downtown Stockholm that has a balcony. It's great, the chairs are plush and comfortable, everyone gets two armrests, and there's even a bar just outside the theater itself where you can order cocktails, beer and stuff. The balcony tickets cost a bit more, but are so worth it.

Thanks for the great review MG!

You pretty much answered every question I wanted to know.
Glad you enjoyed the movie. Now I just need a refresher on the 1st one...

Thx!

Thanks, Moogly. We're planning a mid-week group day to re-watch the original, grab some dinner, and then see the new one.

already planning to catch it a second time in theaters.

absolutely amazing film that stays with you after you’ve seen it, and beautifully, ENGAGINGLY treads and expands upon the philosophical grounds of the first movie. also, if you loved the visuals and audio of the first one, be prepared for the hammer this time around as well. the scene compositions, music, and general futuristic neo-noir flare are at emergency levels at almost all times. this movie drowns fans in their desires.

i’m shocked that it’s doing poorly at the moment at the box office; but hey, masterpieces usually have an upramp time before being heralded. this one is already a classic. any material that reflects this deeply on the human condition always will be.

some kinda-spoilers, but not really, but still yeah. new [Re: MooglyGuy]

Still trying to wrap my head around some of the allegory. Why the bees, and inserting his hand in the hive, and the swarm on his hand after. And for bees, where are the flowers/foliage? And with the lone flower by the dead tree... it all has related purpose. Still contemplating it all. Sexual allusions to barrenness (dead tree), the emergence of life there (the lone flower), impotence in contrast to fertility of bees. The insertion of his hand into the honeywell was obvious. The whole entire scene is worthy of herbs and Pink Floyd discussion to get my head around it.

Was anyone else thinking "Kreager" with the holigraphic girl friend?

Yeah it tanked at the box office. 31.5 mil opening weekend is pretty sad especially for a movie like this.

Haven't seen it yet, I'll wait for DVD.

Only here to annoy...

The bee thing is a callback to a scene with Rachael in the original movie. Deckard asks her what she'd do if she saw a wasp in her hand - she replies right away that she'd kill it.

But K doesn't kill the bees. He sees the bees and appears surprised, even amazed at them being there. How can something like them be alive in Las Vegas, after all this time?

Thanks for the recommendation. This movie rocked in every sense. It was mesmerizing. I wasn't excited about this until I read your post. It stayed with me for hours after. The director Villeneuve keeps impressing me. I really enjoyed Arrival also, though not as much as BR. Very rarely do I watch a movie where I cannot find a single flaw. I'm gonna go see it again and see if I pick up any little nuances I may have missed the first time around.

I highly recommend it in IMAX. If you are reading this and haven't seen it, it is a must see on the big screen. Run don't walk to see it.
