MAME rom's description
#370185 - 10/07/17 05:23 PM

I don't know if it's the right forum to make this post, but I think some MAME rom's haven't the correct title.
For instance:
"House of the Dead" -> "The House of the Dead"
"Don't Ask Software SAM" -> "Don't Ask Software S.A.M."
"Cyvern" -> "Cyvern - The Dragon Weapons"

And why the NES games' "Snake's Revenge (Euro)" and the clone "Snake's Revenge (USA)" have "mgear2" and "mgear2u" as names? It doesn´t make any sense... I think

It's up to whoever added the ROMs in the first place, most likely they haven't been noticed, otherwise known as They Just Didn't Care in TVTropes-speak.

Because the software lists generally don't follow anything, they were mostly copy+pasted from other sources such as GoodNES and given short filenames. Why they used mgear2 when the title isn't the same is anyone's guess, it makes as much sense as calling the Midway version of Pac-Man puckmanu.

I am not a fan of the shortened regions e.g. "Euro" either, never mind the fact that there were actually two PAL regions for the NES, with some games not actually being released in both regions (e.g. Aussie Rules Footy is PAL-A only, while Megaman 5 is PAL-B only).

I'd recommend creating a MAMETesters.org bug for these changes, original poster, if you aren't capable of editing the sourcecode and submitting a pull request yourself on Github. That way it can be tracked better than a random post on MAMEWorld Forums.

The severity of such a change over at MAMETesters.org is rather low though, to be honest. Additionally, setnames are rarely changed for clarification purposes, usually more often to reflect changes in the relatively arbitrary "parent"/"clone" relationships.

General rules of thumb for MAME applicable here:
- "Name" field is comprised of the full title as seen on the title screen.
- software list shortname "romset names" often cue off of the arcade platform, using the element of least surprise, ie. Namco/Midway Pac-Man arcade, pacman, is named pacman on all the other console and computer platforms on which it appears.

it's not really uncommon, short names are just meant to be easy to remember.

that's why quite often the english names are used on japanese sets simply with 'j' appended, even if the name is different, it's easier to remember.

also sometimes with games in a series they'll have the number in the series rather than the title, see ssideki4 in MAME for another example of this.

there's no 'setname must be a shortened version of the description' rule
