Using Ultimarc with Solenoids

Hi All, brand new to this site I am! I am resurrecting an old game project that needs an 8bit program to be punched into paper tape. This uses a non standard format so I need to make a solenoid punch machine to do this. I was going to use an old PC with a parallel port and access this by DOS to stream the program file to the machine. Now discovered the USB Ultimarc via Ebay. So, would some kind person outline how to use this device and what software could I experiment with to stream a file to the output of the Ultimarc? Thank you all.

Which specific Ultimarc device are you referring to?
Most of Ultimarc's products are keyboard encoders. They take input from switches (usually arcade buttons and joysticks) and translate them into keyboard key presses.
I'm having trouble seeing how a keyboard encoder would help in your situation.

Thanks for the reply. My first lesson is that there are more than one Ultimarc device. ![](//www.mameworld.info/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/oops.gif) I am looking at the PAC-Drive Output Driver Board With USB Cable (eg on Ebay UK # 141838911243). This drives LEDs up to 500mW so ideal for me to interface solenoids to.

Did you check out the Ultimarc page? It's got probably everything you need to know...

Good luck...

Pessimist: Oh, this can't get any worse!
Optimist: Yes, it can!

Thank you for the advice Bad-a-Bily. I am planning to use the Ultimarc driver outside of the Mame/GameEx environment to drive a machine to punch holes in paper tape for a ~200K file. Would LEDblinky handle 200K frames? Also could someone explain how to access the Ultimarc driver directly through C++/Python/DOS etc; as I suspect I will need to build a program to accomplish this?

Thank you Krik! Found the SDK. I am sure I can figure it from here. Thanks all. Fingers crossed.
