"For reasons unknown, they decided to stick with Rod Land as the title for the final international version." Isn't it obvious? Someone must have told them what R&T means in English after the location test version was sent out but before the international release was finalised.

yeah, it's quite an obscure reference, I doubt it would have been enough to get the game renamed.
I think they just realised R&T was a pretty crap / forgettable name, or maybe even Taito had words because of the use of the colour cycling rainbow? *cough* Rainbow Islands *cough*
Rodland is a better name anyway, even Rittam would have been, R&T is just uninspired.
As for the vertical text flag, I imagine it's because they used standard base code on the platform, and the platform has vertical games, so a flag to draw the text in the opposite direction would make sense in that case with a different font.
