IPAC2 with an arcade trackball
#367224 - 06/25/17 09:37 PM

I am trying to build a dedicated mame Missile Command cabinet. I have the game running in Mame on the PC no problem using the keyboard to control it.

I researched on the Ultimarc site which interface board can use an arcade trackball (not a usb one, I don't have that), and it said to use the IPAC 2 board.

I set up the board with the pc, wired up the trackball, and it does not work. The board does get a green light, and the player 1 coin and player 1 start switches do work, so I assume I need to configure the ipac in some way.
I downloaded winipac utility but I don't see any option to enable or do anything with the trackball pins in the middle of the board.

Any help would be appreciated....

Which version of the IPAC2 do you have? Older models didn't support trackballs and spinners. Ultimarc used to sell a separate interface called the Opti-PAC for that.

Does your board actually have a pin connector labeled "trackball" like this?...

I think you need to enable mouse in the mame.ini...

create one (if you don't already have it) by running...

mame64 -cc

...from the command line

Then edit this section and change the value for "mouse" from 0 to 1...

Code:

#
# CORE INPUT OPTIONS
#
coin_lockout 1
ctrlr
mouse 1
joystick 1
lightgun 0
multikeyboard 0
multimouse 0
steadykey 0
ui_active 0
offscreen_reload 0
joystick_map auto
joystick_deadzone 0.3
joystick_saturation 0.85
natural 0
joystick_contradictory 0
coin_impulse 0

If you'd rather enable it on a game-by-game basis, you can create a game-specific ini file called missile.ini and just add the single line...

Code:

mouse 1

Yeah I already made that change but no go.

I'm wondering if I can do something to show it working in the winipac utility? using that utility you can see if you have clicked a button or two, but I am looking for a way to confirm that the pc is receiving the signals.

It is also possible that the wiring is incorrect, there doesn't seem to be any guide on the Ultimarc site as to how the wiring is to be done to make the arcade trackball work with the pin setup of the ipac board. I found one description on a different site but that was a bit vague as well.

It might be a wiring problem.

Have you seen these pages yet?...

Perhaps you get wiring info in the Arcade Game manual, were the ball comes from.
