Gog have now done a deal with SNK to sell NeoGeo games on their site. https://www.gog.com/forum/general/release_15_snk_neogeo_classics_0f471/page1
Apparently the emulator they are packaged with is junk but from reading the thread the ROMs themselves can be yanked out and used in MAME without issues.
If anyone has these (or buys these) and wants to comment on exactly what you get as far as the ROMs are concerned (i.e. how what you get compares to what MAME wants, which specific sets you get etc) please do so, I am interested to know more (but not interested enough in actually playing the games to spend the money to buy them)

I didn't buy the GOG versions, but I do have the DotEmu published ones from Humble Bundle's "Humble NEOGEO 25th Anniversary Bundle" from December 2015. That set had 23 DRM free NeoGeo games all of which, once installed, have a ZIP file with the roms in it under the install folder which pretty much exactly match the MAME sets (ZIP file name, CRCs, etc). The emulator that DotEmu used is garbage.
Based on the comments on the SNK GOG community board they are largely the same sets with some possible updates. Someone (not me) already posted how to use the ROMS in another emu.
To get a legal edition of the 15 games GOG has so far it's certainly reasonable option.

The games are modified versions of the Humble and Steam versions. While the Humble ones are basically a modified Nebula with the roms in a zip file, the Steam versions use modified roms.
You're better off waiting for SNK to run another Humble with the games. That way you pay less AND don't give them any money because they don't want quality, they would rather pay DotEmu to shit out a crappy Nebula hack instead.

Install, go to folder, in the "game" folder there's your roms in neogeo.zip and the other set (eg. mslug.zip). They're identical to the 25th anniversary Humble Bundle, same old DotEmu junk.
Also included is neogeo.dat, which begins with
Code:
MultiPart: Nebula 2.25 NeoGeo Romsets (Based on Mr-J RomData)

Yes, I ah... kinda made them reveal that they're using a modified version of Nebula which was licensed out legally to Gametap back in the day. They bought the rights to it and made a mess of it.
