So I guess I'll need to look at GIMP again.
#366074 - 05/16/17 07:56 AM

When I dumped it, it was a mess. Maybe it still is.

I haven't needed to print an image in a very long time, and all my image manipulation has been done in paint.net.

Printer's test image page: fine.

Paint.net's printing of an image created entirely in-app: faded, desaturated, no black, whatever it is that's wrong, it sucks.

I looked for a solution on the internet, and found replies several years old, saying things like "check your ink levels," "clean your print heads," "make the image darker," or "the file might not be in a format compatible with paint.net."

Same image printed by IrfanView, because it was handy: perfect.

Since PhotoShop Express from the Windows store is just a cropping tool with filters, going to GIMP2. Ah, new version just a this past week.

GIMP 2.6 was nice but not for everyone, I guess. 2.8, which is already rather old, is very good IMHO. Look for GMIC, and "GIMP extensions", and you'll have a very powerful graphics package.

The only 'but' I have for now is the different function exports for plugins they have between 32 and 64 bit versions, so some plugins don't load and show an error at launch time, I just delete them from the plugins folder.

I've been using GIMP for many years and really I don't like Photoshop at all compared to GIMP.

I use Gimp. Very powerful, and google helps to learn any skill that you need when you need it.

Sometimes printer drivers won't use the black cartridge to print photos/graphics. Only for text. So for color photos it makes dark colors (including black) by mixing the other colors. And you could get gross looking pictures as a result

You might want to check the printer settings in paint.net for anything that might cause this kind of issue, like:

(1) Is the app doing color management? Maybe try to let the printer manage colors. Photoshop has this.
(2) Is there a setting in the printer driver to explicitly tell it to use the black cart on photos? Maybe enable it.
(3) Did the paper settings somehow get messed up? The amount of ink it puts down is tied to paper settings so if you get it wrong...

GIMP is okay when you absolutely have to use it. But it's still not great.

Good luck!

Note the issue is either paint.net or paint.net not liking Canon printers. You've pretty much duplicated the unhelpful answers:
1) There's no suggestion of settings for paint.net that would fix this, or where such settings might be.
2) The printer works fine when other apps print the image.
3) Both apps send the image to the same printer dialog before it is printed.
