Space Cyclone progress
#365623 - 05/02/17 10:45 PM

don't currently have access to my main PC with the login details for my site etc. so

from a GFX point of view the palettes for the 32x32 sprites (UFO etc.) need fixing and the starfield needs emulating (seems to be PROM based for the star layout, how they flicker is unknown)

It also looks like there might be some kind of hardware collision because right now you can't shoot the large enemies. There's a bit in the inputs that if you turn on you can shoot them, but then if you shoot in the left side of the playfield the game gets stuck drawing an explosion sequence forever.

sound CPU (which presumably does speech with a DAC like Stratovox) is not hooked up yet. There's probably some discrete sound stuff there too which is beyond my ability.

Great work so far. It's nice to see another very obscure game get preserved.

I always thought, judging by the fuzzy flyer screenshots, that the enemy ships were similar to some of those in Krooz'r. Now I see that they aren't saucers at all.

Hope to see an update and a Youtube clip of Space Cyclone on your site later.

Flyer describes occasional message during gameplay. So this matches your description.

When first seeing the flyer many years earlier, it gave appearance that it was a game with player flying a ship in space.....not shooting an anti-aircraft gun from the ground. The flyer doesn't appear to show grass/ground on bottom of the monitor.

When three Bems come down to earth, ....
-

Whoever designed the flyer did a deceptive job even though they did have one text description to find an escape in case vendors that purchased the game thought they were being misled.

The name Space Cyclone should have been "Shoot the Bems" as a title instead. It might have piqued (ie: peeked) more interest, but marketing departments then thought all games need the word "space" in order for game to sell which was dumb. Asteroids did just fine without the "space" prefix.

Maybe if Gremlin had added "Space" to Frogs and called it "Space Frogs", it would have been an arcade hit.

maybe there are other versions, maybe the flyer is a mockup

It kinda makes sense, the enemies come down in a spinning pattern, moving from one cloud to another before reaching the ground, it also has the lightning so I guess there are meteorological themes at least.

Those could be possible scenarios. Too bad we won't find out even though it is minor thing compared to preserving the game which is the bigger thing anyway.

That explains the cyclone name. If I were in marketing group, I would have given opinion of game name: "Shoot the Bems" or better yet if name required the "space" prefix... "Space Bems"

Of course I still believe "Don Bear Near" (mistranslation of Dunk Mania) would have been a great arcade name for a video game. A cab that looks and operates like Atari's Triple Hunt in woods setting where player tries to shoot at a bear (almost always hiding behind the trees) as the bear tries to work its way closer to approaching and finally going after the hunter.
