Discovered my portable HDD with my 3DS and MAME stuff, and iTunes library on it took a dump. Literally spent WEEKS reading files from it, saving as much as I could. Got tired of it and tore it apart for the magnets.
I get home, and notice I'm missing a drive... (not yet sure if it's bad since I've been checking them one by one with a USB cradle on my laptop) so I try to reboot. Now my computer doesn't boot! I had just installed new software so I figured, well, time to put Acronis to good use!
Now, I find that the HDD with ALL of my games on it (MAME/SOFTWARE LISTS/PC games, ETC...) is toast! AAAND it also has my fU@$%@$ c:\ backups on it too!
I am so screwed. <500GB limit per month on my downloads for this drive.

Looks like I can recover *some of that drive, including roughly 80% of MAME stuff (not necessarily software list stuff) and just about all of my personal pictures. I HAD NO BACKUP OF THOSE Pics 😵
But it turns out that I have another dead drive. It is COMPLETELY dead to the point that my computer won't even boot with it plugged in... and it had all of my porn, tv shows, and software downloads 💀

What kind of drives are they? I swear by western digital green and red 4500 rpm drives. I've never had one fail. 7200 rpm drives just aren't reliable enough for important data.
Also, how are you formatting your drives?
I tried to format a 2TB drive once using an old USB to SATA adapter. It appeared to format correctly, but it wasn't working correctly. Turns out that the adapter didn't work with Advanced Format 4K sector hard drives or something. Or maybe the drive was too large. I'm not sure.
I later connected the bare drive to an internal SATA connection in my primary PC and formatted it that way and it worked as expected.

One is a WD Black and the other is a Seagate. Had a WD My passport crap out on my while on deployment. I always install them and format them in Windows, if needed. Don't remember if I used MBR or GPT on these...
4500RPM? damn, that's slower than a laptop. How can you stand it? Or, do you mean 5400?

Because I just ordered two of these and many reviews beg to differ. It's hard to take it with a grain of salt with the number of portable WD drives I've seen fail and my own experience just now :/
The WD green line doesn't have very good bang for the buck...
