A programmer named HPMAN is porting Beats of Rage to NeoGeo.

damn... so they're porting a game that is basically an amateurish looking rip-off of a far better game to the NeoGeo and somehow managing to make it look even worse in the process?

Jue Zhan Tian Huang is starting to feel slightly threatened

I'm all for homebrew development, but when your homebrew is ripping sprites (so no more legal than a straight bootleg) and putting them in a generic and very dull game engine with completely uninspired gameplay then I start to ask 'why'

There's the potential for so much more, heck, doing a straight bootleg port of the Streets of Rage 2/3 code to the NeoGeo and rewriting the graphic / sound handling to use the NeoGeo system would be better than what is on display here, and no more illegal.

I dunno Haze, it looks kind of fun, as fun as an average beat em up at least, and maybe the guy will add some extra flare when he's done with the main porting. You should really lighten up. We're getting another game on NeoGeo hardware, you don't need to brainstorm for negatives.

I'd say realistic.

The Neo might not be the best machine in the world, but relative to a lot of other systems it has the strength of being quite simple to work with and having a high rom capacity.

Maybe not the greatest 'homebrew' machine as it's always going to require bios roms, meaning to run on an emulator you're always going to have to download something, but in terms of developing for it there's not a huge amount you need to understand so it's a very good target to develop something 'cool'

In this case, right off the bat you can see the whole thing mistakes 'lots of animation' for 'good animation' with everything looking out of place (mainly because it *is* out of place) and then there's a jarring contrast between those overdone character and background animations and how the rest of the world interacts.

It's an ideal machine if you want to do something quirky and interesting, something unique, but a D-list beat 'em 'up on a platform that already has much stronger contenders in the genre does seem a bit pointless, and from a technical point of view it's in no way a showcase for the platform.

I'm not saying people shouldn't enjoy themselves in doing this, and I'm sure it's a rewarding project for the people involved for other reasons, just as a lot of the junk we emulate in MAME can be rewarding for other reasons, but by the same logic, it's not really easy to get excited by the results.

Please don't add this romset to mame otherwise it will open the floodgates for any/all homebrew stuff. MAME is meant to be a historical archive of commercial systems not a collection point of random personal projects.

It would go in HBMAME unless/until/if it got bootlegged and put into arcades, or at least that has gotten games put into baseline in the past.

It's a little more complex than that these days, especially with the non-arcade stuff.

MAME is above all else a hardware emulator, that strives to emulate hardware as well as possible while also cataloguing a large library of software that uses that hardware, and how the two interact.

I've said before it would actually be nice to have various dev-developed hardware test modules in there too that could easily verify behaviour of certain custom chips in MAME against the PCB, such things would be incredibly useful for catching sneaky regressions etc.

That doesn't mean something like this would automatically be added however, although it can't be ruled out either, especially not if people are using it on real hardware. The current development scene for systems is still a valid scene, and ultimately does need documenting somewhere for things that have real worth. For things that have no worth there's HBMAME, which would still be better off being called misfitMAME.
