The most compelling reason to them to keep them out rarely makes it to the news, it's greed. Maybe they are also racist and want Muslims out because 95% of terrorist attacks are from Muslims, but overall the Republicans up top know it costs an estimated $60,000+ to bring over each refugee and get them housed and fed until they get on their own feet. If they don't block stuff like this and other spending like the department of education then there will be no room for them to lower their own taxes including removing the estate tax. Like I've said they would rather people lose their insurance, deals on a first house (literally Trump's first executive order), or even lives than to pay an extra dollar in taxes. They mask their greed with slogans and celebrities and pointing blame on other groups.

What I've read is that Trump claims that it is like what happened with Obammy but the situation with Obammy wasn't even a ban but increased vetting that led to a 6 month slowdown, and even if so, it wasn't a religion ban which is what Trump is doing. Even Giuliani threw Trump under the bus and said Trump asked him to form a Muslim ban but to figure out wording to keep its wording legal since banning based on religion is illegal.
