"Trump names new FCC chairman: Ajit Pai, who wants to take a 'weed whacker' to net neutrality "

I must admit... I lack the understanding on this issue to know if this is a good thing... or a bad thing.

I'm doing further reading.

Net neutrality is about a way for the ISPs to double charge you. Once for sending data and once for receiving it. Then zero rate the services they want to push. The ISPs managed to make it a partisan issue through the usage of campaign contributions. In my state I watched the parties flip flop on the issues and both present the same bills. But when it was the other party it was the dumbest thing evar. Now it is the 'free market' at work. Most telco bills are written by the ISPs and not your local political critters. Do not fall for it.

At its 'base' it kinda is an assault on the freedom of the internet to support net neutrality. The thing is not even needed when there is a healthy competition between ISPs. We do not have that so many of them are acting monopolistic and ologopolistic ways. Which means they probably need even more regulation (meaning net neutrality regulations). That has a long term down side as well as it does not let smaller players in. As you have to be a big player just to meet the rules. Rules the bigger players will get to set. So it becomes a catch 22. If there were enough players crap ones would get weeded out. Instead we have a small handful of players who set the rules. Think about this in the late 90s would you consider picking your phone company or cable company to run your internet? No they over charged and under delivered on services. Now those are usually the only choices you have.

Lumped into 'net neutrality' is government run ISPs. Basically some of the smaller towns are 'hey big ISP we would like some juicy bad ass internet'. The ISP says 'nah you are not worth it'. Town then thinks 'hey I can make my own with some bonds and taxes'. At which point the ISPs collectively flip their shit on something they did not even compete with in the first place. They create in the name of 'net neutrality' rules that make it harder for small town govs to create a telco service for their people.

This site is a fairly one stop shop for finding out about it. http://stopthecap.com/

The previous guy was 'supposed' to eviscerate them too and he didn't. So we shall see. Honestly, the whole thing is a shitshow.

Basically net neutrality means that Internet is just a basic carrier for any data. But ISPs want to charge differently depending on what service you get from Internet: video chat? More expensive. Simple web surfing? Cheaper. Downloading from P2P? More expensive. And so on. Since Trump thinks that markets are better regulated by the companies, instead of having some kind of agent looking for the consumers' interests, I guess that weed whacker means getting rid of smaller ISPs and then let the large ones decide what's legal and what's not. Because what's important is not Internet, or the Internet users; it's the Internet market and the economy machine.

An example is the 'Sun Law' here in Spain. If you grow lettuces, and eat your own lettuces, and even sell some lettuces to some shops, it's perfectly fine, no one will scream at you that you're killing the lettuce market. You've become lettuce-independent, and everyone rejoices. However, if you have solar panels in your far far away home, and you want to become somewhat energy-independent, and evens sell the surplus into the electric network, wait there, you're damaging the energy economy of the country! So to have, manage, operate, repair, or even look at a solar panel, you have to pay an extra tax, which makes having them pretty much useless as they're way more expensive than just plugging in from the normal electric network. In the words of the goverment, 'we want citizens to become energy-independent, but not at the expense of damaging the energy economy'. In other words, energy companies' interests are more important than the consumer and it's written in the law. We all knew it, banks are more important, everything is more important than people, but for the first time we had it as a law saying to us: 'you only exist to provide money to the large companies, and you can't escape that'.

The same way, small ISPs and net neutrality are in the way of extra earnings for large ISPs, and the FCC chairman will invoke hell on earth to make those extra earnings come forth. And get some cash himself, I guess. Because we ALL know politicians do it for the people.

Politics WILL go in the war room no exceptions and it's a bad thing if it saves you having to read more.

No net neutrality means a republican whore can slow anything that goes against their political views down to the point that nobody will read it and right wing garbage can glide at light speed.
