VpMAME is the mirror image of arcade builds - and doesn't even need the rendering of the earliest MAME. Except for The Wizard of Oz, there aren't any tables that would need it. (Another possible caveat might be Pinball 2000 tables, if the holo-display feature needed to be tackled by an instance of MAME.)

it means VpMAME can't benefit from actual improvements in MAME and MAME can't benefit from actual improvements in VpMAME.
that alone is a reason that tracking mainline is better.
(it's also a reason the current unified project is far better as it means there's no chance of MAME / MESS diverging and becoming two incompatible codebases which has almost happened at several points in the past, and would probably have happened if not for the likes of Nathan Woods putting in a painstaking and admirable amount of effort to keep everything in sync even through some pretty rough changes - definitely one of the unsung heroes of the project.)
